Week Six of the NFL has now seen a number of teams’ trajectory become more apparent following another round of losses.
Now that teams have had a number of weeks to settle into the 2026 season, there is the scope for significant changes to be made. The Indianapolis Colts are one of those teams after they confirmed the firing of general manager Chris Ballard.
A 2-4 record has the Colts sitting in second spot of the AFC South, but the consensus is pretty bleak for Indianapolis. The departure of the general manager does put into question the direction of the team given they do not have a first round pick for 2027.
The Colts are still paying out for their trade to bring in Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets. This costly trade has many feeling that the Colts could be set for a really difficult decade along with their other issues.
The loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday summed up the torrid start to the season being endured by the Colts. Next up is a game against the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings which could inflict even more damage on the organisation.
“Is there a bleaker team outlook for the next decade? The Sauce Gardner trade was like a self-imposed aspiration punishment. They don’t have their pick this year. They’re in the 2027 draft, and it’s going to be the 8th pick in the draft. It’s going to go right to the Jets,” said Simmons.

“They play at Minnesota and at Jacksonville, their next two. They’re 2-4 for the year, with a pretty lucky win against Houston in week 3, and then they beat Washington’s backup in week 4. I just don’t see how it gets better. They’re booing the entire game. This is the angriest crowd you could possibly have.

“They’ve had 14 different starting QBs. They have the 3rd-longest playoff drought, and they have no AFC South titles. Carly, who has been taking notes on the sideline, she’s trying to learn stuff. Would she say a few weeks ago, “We’re going to look at everything: the coach, GM”? It feels like they’re going to clean house. I think that’s what she’s written down: clean house.”
Clearly, the short-term future of the Colts is unlikely to provide much for their fans to shout about. Perhaps it is time for the organisation to consider giving their future a chance by offloading some players that could return future picks.
To be in such a situation like this and not have a first round pick to look forward to next year is a really worrying prospect.
