DPR Korea expose Morocco’s gap to elite in U17 World Cup last-16 tie

Morocco’s run at the 2026 Women’s U17 World Cup ended in emphatic fashion as defending champions DPR Korea won 6-0 in Wednesday’s last-16 meeting.

The Atlas Lionesses had reached the knockout stage, but were unable to cope with one of the leading forces in the age-group game. DPR Korea set the tone from the opening minutes, controlling possession, dictating the tempo and creating a series of dangerous attacks.

Morocco struggled to settle into the contest and found themselves four goals behind by half-time. The scoreline left little doubt about the likely outcome, with the defending champions having established a decisive advantage before the break.

The Atlas Lionesses attempted to respond, but could not find a way back into the match. Defensive weaknesses and repeated losses of possession gave DPR Korea further opportunities to maintain pressure and exploit the difference between the two sides.

The second half followed a similar pattern. DPR Korea continued to dominate and added two more goals, completing a 6-0 victory and bringing Morocco’s tournament to an abrupt conclusion.

The result underlined the distance that remains between Morocco’s young players and the world’s strongest teams at this level. Reaching the last 16 represents a positive step, but the manner of the defeat showed the scale of the challenge facing the Atlas Lionesses in future international competition.

For Morocco, the focus will now turn to ensuring the experience contributes to the development of the next generation. Further investment in youth development, more international fixtures and sustained support for young players will be important if the gap is to be reduced.

DPR Korea’s performance also demonstrated why they entered the tie as reigning world champions. Their early intensity, control of the ball and efficiency in front of goal prevented Morocco from building any momentum and allowed them to take command before half-time.

For the Atlas Lionesses, the elimination brings a difficult end to their campaign, but their qualification for the knockout stage provides a foundation on which to build. The next challenge will be converting the lessons of this defeat into progress in future editions of the Women’s U17 World Cup.
