Algeria face Burkina Faso as Morocco draw Nigeria in Olympic qualifying

The line-up for the third round of the African women’s football qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has been confirmed, with Algeria set to meet Burkina Faso and Morocco drawn against Nigeria.

Algeria, who finished third at the most recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, reached this stage after dismantling Central African Republic 15-0 on aggregate. Their reward is a tie against Burkina Faso, who eliminated Equatorial Guinea with a 3-1 win followed by a 1-1 draw.

Morocco advanced after Congo conceded their second-round tie, but face a major challenge against Africa’s top-ranked side, Nigeria. The Atlas Lionesses lost the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to Nigeria, going down 3-2 on 26 July 2025.

Cote d’Ivoire will play reigning African champions Cameroon in what has been described as the “match of the in-laws”. Cote d’Ivoire progressed after beating Democratic Republic of the Congo 7-1, while Cameroon went through after Guinea’s tie was awarded to them.

Senegal have been paired with neighbours Mali. Senegal overcame Tunisia 1-0 away and 2-0 at home, while Mali recovered from a 3-1 first-leg defeat by beating Benin 6-2 in the return match.

Tanzania, who eliminated Botswana, will face Ethiopia, who knocked out Rwanda. South Africa have been drawn against Angola, who advanced at the expense of Namibia.

Malawi, surprise finalists at the last Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, meet Kenya in another tie. Malawi’s Chawinga sisters will be involved as the team seek to continue their Olympic campaign.

Kenya reached the third round with the biggest aggregate victory of the previous stage, defeating Seychelles 22-0 across the two matches. The reigning African runners-up, meanwhile, overcame Zimbabwe 2-0 in the first leg before completing a 7-0 victory in the return fixture.

The remaining tie will see Ghana play Zambia. Ghana progressed comfortably against Mauritius, while Zambia were too strong for Uganda.

The first legs of the third-round ties will be played on 23 February 2027, with the return matches scheduled for 6 March next.
