TP Mazembe were eliminated from the CAF Champions League after Club Africain secured a 1-0 victory in the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie in Rades.
The Congolese side had been held to a 1-1 draw at home a week earlier, but their hopes of progressing ended when they were beaten at the Hammadi Agrebi Olympic Stadium. The result gave Club Africain a 2-1 aggregate win.
Cameroon striker Taddeus Nkeng scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time, finding the net in the 45th minute plus two minutes. Nkeng joined Club Africain last summer from Stade Malien.
TP Mazembe, one of the continent’s most established clubs, will therefore miss out on the group stage for the second consecutive year.
There was better news for Morocco’s reigning champions, MAS Fes, who reached the next round after a dramatic 2-1 away win against ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan.
The first leg had ended 1-1, and the tie remained level when ASEC’s Kevin Bakare equalised in the 73rd minute after MAS Fes forward Christopher Ibayi had put the visitors ahead in the 62nd minute.
But Khalid Baba struck in the seventh minute of added time to send the Moroccan club through on a 3-2 aggregate score.
The victory means MAS Fes return to the CAF Champions League after a 14-year absence. ASEC Mimosas are eliminated, leaving Cote d’Ivoire without a representative after FC San Pedro also suffered defeat.
FC San Pedro’s 2-0 loss to Nouadhibou in Nouakchott overturned the advantage they had taken from the first leg. The Ivorian club had won 2-1 in San-Pedro, scoring the winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Nouadhibou changed the course of the tie by scoring in the 10th and 53rd minutes. Their victory secured a 3-2 aggregate success and completed the elimination of both Ivorian clubs in the second preliminary round.
