Asante Kotoko will look to return to winning ways when they host Ghana Premier League leaders Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, November 1, in one of the standout fixtures of Matchday Nine.
The Porcupine Warriors head into the encounter eager to bounce back after being held to a 1-1 draw by AshantiGold ’04 at the Len Clay Stadium last weekend, a result that extended their inconsistent start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Kotoko currently sit eighth on the league table with 12 points from eight matches, having won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five league outings. They have scored nine goals and conceded the same number during that period, highlighting the need for greater defensive solidity despite their attacking threat.
Interim head coach Hamza Obeng will be hoping his side can make home advantage count once again. All three of Kotoko’s league victories this season have come at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where they have remained a difficult side to beat.
History also favours the Kumasi giants. Since the 2020/21 season, Kotoko have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six Ghana Premier League home meetings against Medeama, a record they will hope to build on in front of their passionate supporters.
However, the visitors arrive in Kumasi as the league’s form team. Medeama lead the standings with 17 points after eight matches and have responded impressively to their only defeat of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Aduana FC last weekend.
The Tarkwa-based side have won four of their last five league matches, scoring a league-leading 14 goals while conceding just seven. Their attacking efficiency and disciplined approach have established them as early title contenders.
Despite their impressive form, Medeama’s away record offers Kotoko encouragement. The Mauve and Yellow have managed just one win from four away league matches this season, alongside two draws and one defeat, suggesting they remain vulnerable on the road.
Head coach Nebojsa Kapor will expect his players to maintain the intensity and attacking fluency that have propelled them to the top of the table, while also improving their away performances against one of the country’s biggest clubs.
The clash is expected to feature several key individual battles across the pitch, with Kotoko aiming to close the gap on the leading pack and Medeama determined to preserve their place at the summit of the Ghana Premier League.
With valuable points at stake for both sides, Sunday’s showdown promises an entertaining contest between a rejuvenated Medeama side chasing the title and a wounded Asante Kotoko outfit desperate to reignite their campaign in front of the Baba Yara faithful.
