Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is not appreciated nearly as much as he deserves to be. Lunin has been playing second fiddle to Thibaut Courtois for the longest time now, and no one really appreciates him the way he deserves to be appreciated.

That is not to say he's not appreciated at all. In fact, Real Madrid fans know they have a very good goalkeeper in Lunin.

However, it is just really important to consider how big of a team player Lunin really is.

Andriy Lunin is already a Real Madrid legend, but people are not ready for that conversation

Imagine this: there's a player who does not play football for the majority of the season. He goes months without even seeing a professional pitch, and all he does is keep training, doing his best, and hope that one day the manager will pick him over someone who is arguably the greatest player of all time in his position. That moment rarely ever comes, and when it does, it is usually very unexpected.

He gets a last-minute call-up for the game against his team's biggest-ever rivals. Without any match fitness or rhythm, he is asked to deliver a world-class performance in the absence of his counterpart, and he does exactly that without any game time in months. That, ladies and gentlemen, is just how special Lunin is.

People rarely talk about a squad player this way because there is no squad player like Lunin. He has had chances to go to different clubs on many occasions, and he has turned all of them down because he did not think they were good enough options. He did consider Real Madrid to be a more than good enough option, which is why he stays at the club.

He does not create a fuss about not playing too much, and he is always, always ready to support and help the team whenever they need him. Just after one game, he would go back to being a second-choice goalkeeper on the bench. He would happily cheer on from that position and hope that his team is able to get the job done without him.

Lunin has never once complained about playing time. He did not complain when Real Madrid signed Kepa Arrizabalaga to replace Courtois after his ACL injury in 2023. He did not complain when he was benched for the Champions League final he helped Real Madrid get to because Courtois was back in full fitness.

Between those two events, he was also able to put in some of the best goalkeeping Real Madrid fans have ever seen and earn his place in the starting lineup for a second time. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what Lunin provides, and it is high time people start realising what a special person he is.
