Xabi Alonso praised Pedro Neto’s versatility and attacking threat after Chelsea’s win at Everton, describing him as an option across the wing, wing-back and other advanced roles.

Alonso values Neto’s flexibility across Chelsea’s attack

Speaking after the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the Chelsea manager said Neto had performed well and was a threat to opposing full-backs. Alonso’s comments, reported by football.london, leave the player’s exact positional label open rather than defining him as a wing-back.

The question followed Neto’s use in a wide role. Alonso did not accept that one description had to fit: he said the attacker could contribute as a winger, a wing-back or in an attacking position, and praised his competitiveness.

That flexibility is the clearest takeaway for Chelsea. Alonso’s answer suggests he values what Neto can offer in different areas of the pitch, not simply a fixed position on the team sheet. It does not, by itself, confirm a permanent change to the player’s role.

Alonso also pointed to Neto’s connections with Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Josh Acheampong. He said Neto linked well with those around him, whether operating on the last line or between the lines, and was pleased that he scored.

There is a practical squad benefit in keeping those options open. Neto can threaten a full-back while also contributing in a deeper wide role; that gives Alonso room to adapt how Chelsea use the flank without having to treat the position as a settled tactical formula.

Supporters have already seen selection decisions involving Neto under Alonso, including Alonso’s Chelsea lineup against Fulham. The manager’s latest comments add a useful clue about what he values, but stop short of confirming where Neto will start in future matches.

Neto’s role has also been part of wider discussion around his standing at the club. His long-term Chelsea contract situation is separate from the question Alonso was asked at Everton: how the player fits across the attacking and wide positions.

The manager also praised Palmer, Pedro and Morgan Rogers for their work, noting that their contributions mattered even without goals. That put Neto’s scoring in the context of a wider team performance rather than presenting his output as a one-man story.

In other news…

Alonso did not name a preferred position for Neto, and his remarks should not be read as confirmation that Chelsea have settled on a long-term system for him.

The immediate point is clearer: the manager sees Neto as capable of making an impact in multiple roles and valued his threat against Everton’s full-backs.
