Liverpool came from behind to claim an important three points against nine-man Brentford, but they did not leave London without casualties as Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong were both forced off.
After losing 3-0 at home to Manchester City last week, things looked bleak for Andoni Iraola’s side on Saturday, as Szoboszlai was forced off in the 32nd minute, before Keane Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead.
The Hungarian picked up a hamstring injury during the international break, and after missing the defeat against City and the win at LASK in the UEFA Champions League, he was passed fit to play on Saturday in West London.
However, it seems that he was not at full match fitness, as his afternoon ended prematurely in a fresh blow for The Reds.
Trailing at half-time, Iraola looked to shuffle things around when Brentford were reduced to 10 men just before the break and introduced Frimpong.
But the wing-back then suffered an injury of his own and limped off just five minutes later.
Following the game, Iraola issued an update on the pair.
“Dom felt the same injury; it’s not a new injury and was probably not healed enough, so we will need more time with him,” the Liverpool boss said.
“Jeremie’s was new; I think he finished cramping the other day [against LASK].
“I put him on because, playing against 10, going forward, I thought he could give us more than Ronald [Araujo]. Afterward, I value him a lot, and he was very good, Victor [Munoz] playing as a right-back.
“But it will mean we will lose Dom and Jeremie for some time, yes.”
It was not all bad for the visitors, as Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak struck in the second half to turn the game on its head and earn Liverpool their first Premier League win in almost a month.
“Yes, definitely we got a good battle today,” Iraola said.
“I think they are very important three points for us because I think it’s very expensive to win here.”
He continued: “I think we played really well in the minutes up until we scored the 2-1 against 10 players. I think that we were being patient and we were finding good positions and we were in control of the game really well.
“Probably more disappointed after we scored because you scored the 2-1 and then you feel like you have something to lose.”
Liverpool moved up to fifth in the league with the victory, and will play in-form Brighton & Hove Albion next, before hosting Arsenal at Anfield.
