Chelsea have reportedly begun exploring a possible transfer for Brentford left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf as manager Xabi Alonso considers strengthening his defensive options ahead of future transfer windows. According to The Athletic on Monday, November 2, 2026, the Blues have contacted the Senegal international's representatives to discuss the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old only joined Brentford from West Ham United during the summer in a deal worth approximately £40 million. However, his performances since arriving have attracted attention from several leading Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and Liverpool emerging as potential admirers.
Liverpool are also monitoring the defender's progress and have reportedly made contact with his representatives. Both clubs are therefore assessing the possibility of securing his services, although no agreement or formal transfer bid has been confirmed.
A move to Chelsea would represent another change of London club for Diouf within a relatively short period. He previously featured for West Ham before joining Brentford, meaning a potential switch to Stamford Bridge would make Chelsea his third London destination in approximately 18 months.
Chelsea's interest reflects the uncertainty surrounding their left-back position. Pep Chavarria arrived from Rayo Vallecano during the summer, while Jorrel Hato is another option available to Alonso. Despite their presence, neither defender has fully secured the position, leaving the manager with decisions to make about the most suitable long-term arrangement.
Marco Palestra also occupied the left-back role during Chelsea's recent Premier League victory over Manchester United. Alonso's decision to use a 4-2-3-1 formation in that match highlighted the importance of having full-backs capable of defending consistently while supporting the team's attacking structure.
Diouf's defensive statistics provide an indication of why he has attracted attention. During the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, he has averaged 3.51 tackles and 1.75 interceptions per 90 minutes. Those figures compare favourably with Chavarria, who records 1.43 tackles and 1.43 interceptions, and Hato, whose averages stand at 2.61 tackles and 0.65 interceptions.
The Senegalese international also leads the comparison in ball recoveries, total duels won and aerial duels won. His physical strength and ability to compete in defensive situations could offer Chelsea greater security on the left side of their back line.
His contribution is not limited to defensive duties. Diouf has demonstrated attacking quality throughout his career, registering five assists in 36 appearances for West Ham last season despite the club's relegation from the Premier League. His ability to contribute in the final third adds another dimension to his appeal.
A January transfer appears difficult to arrange because Brentford only completed a substantial investment in the defender a few months ago. The club would have little reason to consider selling immediately after bringing him into the squad.
Next summer could provide a more realistic opportunity if Brentford become open to negotiations. Chelsea may continue assessing his performances and suitability for Alonso's system before deciding whether to make a formal approach.
However, Liverpool's involvement could complicate the pursuit. Both clubs will need to consider Brentford's valuation and the player's preferences if they decide to advance their interest.
