Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has issued a startling warning about Manchester United's Premier League survival prospects, suggesting that the club could suffer relegation if their disappointing performances continue. According to a report by Metro on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the former France international believes there are serious reasons for concern about the situation at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have endured a difficult season under manager Michael Carrick and slipped into the Premier League relegation zone on Saturday after Nottingham Forest recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Manchester City.
That result has increased the pressure on Carrick ahead of Sunday's home encounter with Aston Villa. United desperately need a positive result to improve their league position, with another defeat potentially leaving them in the bottom three when the international break begins.
Leboeuf believes the club's struggles have been developing for some time and that supporters have sufficient reasons to be worried about the direction in which the team is heading.
Speaking to ESPN FC, the former Chelsea centre-back suggested that the warning signs had been visible across several matches and should not be ignored.
"It's been a while since you had to panic because we saw the games that they had," Leboeuf said.
"There is reason to panic and it's been like that for a while."
The former defender also expressed doubts about the progress United have made since Carrick took charge, arguing that the team's performances have shown little meaningful improvement.
Carrick initially made a positive impression after being appointed interim manager last season. During that period, he guided United through an encouraging spell of results that ultimately helped the club secure qualification for the Champions League.
However, the 45-year-old has struggled to reproduce those performances this season, with his team delivering a series of disappointing displays and suffering damaging defeats.
United's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth two weeks ago intensified speculation about Carrick's position. Although he avoided an immediate dismissal, Leboeuf believes the club's hierarchy could eventually have to consider replacing him if results and performances fail to improve.
"Nothing is getting good, we don't see any improvement, we don't see how it can be better," he added.
"Again, I'm all for Michael Carrick. But there is a time when there will be no other choices but getting rid of him."
Nevertheless, Leboeuf argued that the manager should not carry the entire responsibility for United's difficulties. He also questioned the quality, determination and commitment of certain players within the squad, suggesting that some do not meet the standards expected at a club of United's stature.
In his view, dismissing Carrick would not automatically resolve the problems unless the players also accepted responsibility for their performances.
"You can't get rid of those players who don't deserve to play for Manchester United, who aren't good enough for Manchester United," he said.
"They don't have the guts, the courage, the pride of fighting for the club."
Leboeuf delivered his strongest assessment by warning that United could face the unthinkable prospect of relegation if their current performances persist.
"I don't see any solution, I don't see anything getting good and if they carry on like that you could see Manchester United getting relegated, which is amazing," he added.
His prediction is particularly striking considering United's history and standing in English football.
Carrick will now hope his players can respond against Aston Villa and begin moving away from the relegation places. United can draw confidence from their midweek Champions League encounter, when they recovered from two goals down to defeat Roma 3-2, recording their first victory in any competition since September.
