Jose Mourinho’s future as Real Madrid manager could face fresh uncertainty following Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona, with reports indicating that the Spanish giants are considering alternative coaching options despite the Portuguese tactician’s promising start. According to a report published by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, club president Florentino Perez is reportedly evaluating potential successors as the team approaches a crucial stage of the season.

Mourinho has completed his first 100 days since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, winning nine of his opening 11 matches. Despite those encouraging results, his performances have reportedly failed to convince every member of Madrid’s leadership that he is the right long-term choice.

According to Defensa Central, journalist Jorge Picon has identified Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Como head coach Cesc Fabregas as two figures attracting attention from the club’s hierarchy.

The reported concerns surrounding Mourinho are said to involve the quality of Madrid’s performances rather than results alone. Some officials are reportedly questioning whether the team has consistently displayed the level of football expected from a club with such significant ambitions.

Sunday’s meeting with Barcelona could therefore become an important test for the Portuguese manager. A defeat could intensify scrutiny of his methods and prompt further discussions about whether he should remain in charge beyond the current campaign.

Mourinho returned to Madrid in June after agreeing to a three-year contract. Dismissing him so soon would represent a substantial decision for Perez and the club’s leadership, particularly given the time and resources required to establish a new managerial project.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is reportedly still supported by members of the dressing room. However, the prospect of Madrid falling nine points behind Barcelona could create additional pressure on the hierarchy to reconsider its position.

Arteta and Fabregas are among the potential candidates mentioned should Madrid eventually decide to make a change. Arteta has strengthened his reputation through his work at Arsenal and recently extended his contract until 2030. That agreement could make securing his services a complicated and expensive undertaking.

Fabregas, meanwhile, continues to build his managerial credentials at Como, where his current contract reportedly runs until 2028. His progress has attracted attention, although moving to Madrid would represent a significant step in his coaching career.

Former France national team manager Didier Deschamps has also previously been linked with the possibility of taking charge at the Bernabeu.

Nevertheless, there is no indication that Madrid have entered formal negotiations with any potential replacement. Making another managerial change so early would carry considerable risks, especially while the squad continues adjusting to Mourinho’s tactical approach.

For now, Mourinho remains in control of the team. However, the outcome of Sunday’s Clasico could influence the level of confidence Madrid’s leadership places in him as the club evaluates its ambitions and long-term direction.
