Barcelona Receive Major Injury Boost as Key Player Returns to Group Training Ahead of UCL Clash

Barcelona have received a welcome boost in their efforts to manage a growing defensive injury crisis after Andreas Christensen returned to first-team group training. According to a report by Barca Universal on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the Danish centre-back took part in training with his teammates for the first time since being sidelined by a muscle problem in September.

Christensen has been unavailable since sustaining an injury to his left thigh during Barcelona’s victory over Sevilla around the international break. His absence forced him to miss several important fixtures, including the meetings with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, leaving manager Hansi Flick with fewer experienced options at the back.

The defender’s return to group activities is therefore an encouraging development for the Catalan side, who have had to make adjustments to their defensive structure because of the number of unavailable players. Frenkie de Jong has been used in central defence, while academy youngster Brian Farinas was recently deployed at right-back to help address the shortage of available defenders.

Christensen’s involvement in training gives Flick another potential option in the middle of the defence as Barcelona prepare for a demanding run of matches. Before his injury, the 30-year-old had accumulated 402 minutes across six appearances this season, starting four of those games. His experience and understanding of the club’s playing style could become particularly useful as the schedule becomes more congested.

Barcelona’s immediate attention is on Tuesday’s Champions League encounter against Aston Villa, followed by a difficult league trip to Atletico Madrid next weekend. Having Christensen available again would strengthen the manager’s choices, especially with the team continuing to balance domestic and European commitments.

However, his participation in group training does not automatically mean he is ready to return to competitive action. The coaching and medical departments are expected to assess his physical condition carefully before deciding when he can rejoin the matchday squad.

Christensen has experienced injury setbacks during his time at Barcelona, making a cautious approach particularly important. Flick is unlikely to take unnecessary risks by rushing the defender back before he has completed the necessary stages of his recovery. The club could therefore consider postponing his return to competitive football until after the November international break.

That approach would give the Danish international additional time to regain full fitness and reduce the possibility of another setback. Barcelona will also want to ensure that he can cope with the physical demands of regular first-team football before restoring him to the starting line-up.

When fully fit, Christensen offers qualities that complement Pau Cubarsi’s defensive abilities. He is known for his composure in possession, awareness of positioning and ability to initiate attacking moves from the back. These attributes make him a valuable option in Flick’s system, where defenders are expected to contribute to the team’s build-up play.

For now, Barcelona will continue monitoring his progress before determining when he can resume full training and return to match action. His involvement with the first-team group represents a positive step, but the club’s priority will be ensuring that his recovery is complete before he is considered for selection.
