According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Arsenal Women were held to a 1-1 draw by Birmingham City Women after Olivia Smith scored a spectacular second-half equaliser to earn the Gunners a point.
Birmingham took the lead through Océane Hurtré shortly after the interval, but Smith’s long-range strike brought Arsenal back into the contest after they struggled to convert their numerous goalscoring opportunities.
Arsenal began the match positively, with Alessia Russo threatening in the sixth minute through a header that went wide of the target. The Gunners continued to apply pressure as Lisa Baum and Kyra Cooney-Cross looked to create openings against Birmingham’s disciplined defence.
However, Birmingham also posed a threat on the counterattack. Lily Crosthwaite attempted a long-range effort in the 17th minute but failed to hit the target, while goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley made important interventions to keep Arsenal from taking the lead.
Russo came close to breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute when she connected with a cross from Leah Williamson, but her header struck the right post. Neither side managed to score before halftime, leaving the match goalless at the break.
Birmingham eventually took the lead eight minutes into the second half. Hurtré finished with her left foot from inside the penalty area after receiving an assist from Neve Herron during a quick counterattack.
Arsenal responded in the 66th minute when Smith collected a pass from Georgia Stanway before unleashing a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box into the top-right corner to level the score.
The Gunners pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Russo, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Élisa De Almeida involved in further attacking efforts. However, Baggaley and Birmingham’s defence stood firm to preserve the draw.
Despite four minutes of added time, Arsenal could not find a decisive goal, with the final whistle confirming a 1-1 result that left them disappointed after failing to turn their attacking dominance into victory.
