Arsenal Star Sets Transfer Terms, Leaving Arteta at Risk of Losing a Favourite

Mikel Merino could consider leaving Arsenal if his involvement under Mikel Arteta continues to decline, with a return to Spanish football reportedly among his options.

According to a report by footballTransfers on Saturday, 7 November 2026, uncertainty over his playing time could influence the 30-year-old’s next career decision. Atlético Madrid are reportedly assessing a potential move, while Arsenal may be prepared to consider an offer.

Merino joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in 2024 for €32 million and has become a useful member of Arteta’s squad. He has contributed in important moments, but establishing himself as a regular starter has proved difficult. Eight of his nine Premier League appearances this season have come as a substitute.

That limited involvement is reportedly a concern for the Spain international, whose priority is to play regularly enough to remain in contention for the national team ahead of the 2028 European Championship. A reduced role at club level could make it harder for him to retain his place in Spain’s plans.

Reports in Spain indicate that Atlético Madrid are considering a loan arrangement with a purchase option, with the proposed deal valued at approximately €30 million. Arsenal are reportedly open to Merino leaving, although no agreement has been announced.

The midfielder’s contract at the Emirates Stadium runs until 2028, and Arsenal have not begun discussions over an extension. That leaves the club facing a decision about his future, particularly if his opportunities do not increase during the remainder of the campaign.

Merino has made 59 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, scoring 11 goals. However, only 28 have been starts, underlining the difficulty he has faced in securing a regular place in the starting line-up. His versatility has helped him remain involved, as Arteta has used him in several midfield positions and occasionally further forward as a striker.

Although that adaptability has been valuable, it has not necessarily provided Merino with the regular role he may want at this stage of his career. A move back to Spain could offer a different opportunity, with Atlético among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. Another La Liga destination could also appeal if it provides a clearer route to regular football.

His father, Miguel, recently discussed the decision to leave Real Sociedad, explaining that his son wanted a bigger challenge and the chance to compete in the Champions League and Premier League. He also stressed that Merino is settled at Arsenal and has found the level of competition he sought when he moved to England.

Those comments suggest that the midfielder’s situation is not necessarily driven by dissatisfaction with Arsenal. Instead, the central question appears to be whether his current responsibilities match his ambitions and international objectives.

For now, Merino’s future remains unresolved. Much will depend on whether Arteta gives him a more prominent role and whether Arsenal decide to offer him a new contract. If his minutes remain restricted, a return to La Liga could become a realistic option when the transfer window opens in the coming months.
