According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly considering resting Rodri for their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain as Hansi Flick prepares his squad for this weekend’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.
Journalist Alfredo Martinez reported that the Spanish international could be left out of the PSG match despite having no injury concerns. The possible decision is reportedly part of Barcelona’s efforts to manage his workload ahead of the crucial encounter with Real Madrid.
Flick must decide whether to rest one of his key midfielders for the European fixture to ensure he is fully prepared for El Clasico.
Rodri experienced a difficult start to his Barcelona career because of back problems and registration complications. However, he eventually established himself in the starting lineup and became an important figure in Flick’s plans.
The midfielder has played 690 minutes across 10 appearances in all competitions this season, starting eight matches. He has averaged 69 minutes per game, highlighting his growing importance to the team.
Although Barcelona would prefer to field their strongest possible midfield against PSG, their demanding schedule could force Flick to rotate his squad ahead of the weekend’s meeting with Real Madrid.
Resting Rodri could help preserve his energy for El Clasico, but leaving him out against PSG would also pose a challenge. His composure, experience and ability to control possession make him a valuable presence in midfield, particularly against strong European opposition.
If Flick decides to rest the Spaniard, Gavi, Marc Bernal, Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo are among the players who could partner Pedri in central midfield.
Each option offers different qualities, giving Flick several tactical alternatives. However, finding a replacement capable of providing the same level of control and stability as Rodri could prove difficult.
Flick must therefore balance the importance of the Champions League encounter with the need to have his key players ready for El Clasico. His decision on Rodri’s involvement against PSG could ultimately depend on how he intends to manage the midfielder’s workload ahead of the clash with Real Madrid.
