Chelsea have found a positive development to take from their Carabao Cup elimination by Liverpool, as Romeo Lavia completed his first full 90 minutes in a competitive appearance for the club since arriving at Stamford Bridge in August 2023.
According to a report by Football London on Thursday, 29 October 2026, the Belgian midfielder played the entire encounter at Anfield, where Chelsea were eliminated following a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat after the match finished 1-1 in normal time. Although the result ended the Blues’ hopes of progressing in the competition, Lavia’s achievement offered manager Xabi Alonso an encouraging sign amid the team’s recent difficulties.
The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating period since joining Chelsea from Southampton. A succession of ankle, hamstring and thigh injuries has repeatedly interrupted his development, making it difficult for him to establish himself as a regular starter.
Lavia’s limited availability has been particularly disappointing because of the qualities he has demonstrated whenever he has been fit. His ability to operate in central midfield, retain possession and contribute to the team’s overall balance could make him an important component of Alonso’s plans.
Chelsea have also struggled to build consistency in midfield, partly because injuries have prevented them from regularly fielding their preferred combinations. Lavia’s potential partnership with Moises Caicedo is one option that could strengthen the department if both players can remain available for an extended period.
However, the midfielder’s fitness has remained a major concern since his arrival. The repeated interruptions have restricted his opportunities to gain match rhythm and develop a consistent understanding with his teammates. Completing an entire competitive match therefore represents an important step in his recovery and progress.
Alonso had previously recognised the psychological significance of Lavia managing a full game. The Liverpool encounter has now provided evidence that the midfielder is making progress, although one appearance alone cannot guarantee that his injury problems are behind him.
His performance also attracted positive recognition. The Chelsea Chronicle awarded him a rating of 7 out of 10 in its assessment of the players involved at Anfield, suggesting that his contribution was encouraging despite the disappointing outcome for the team.
For Alonso, Lavia’s return to completing a full match could provide greater flexibility as Chelsea prepare for a demanding schedule. The manager will be keen to assess whether the midfielder can build on this performance without experiencing further physical setbacks.
Chelsea must now shift their focus to Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United. Whether Lavia features in that fixture will depend partly on how he recovers from the physical demands of the Liverpool contest and whether the coaching and medical staff believe he is ready for another appearance.
If his recovery proceeds positively, Alonso may have an opportunity to give him further minutes alongside Caicedo. A sustained return to fitness would offer Chelsea another midfield option and could help the team improve its consistency during the coming weeks.
While the Carabao Cup defeat remains a setback, Lavia’s milestone gives Chelsea a reason for encouragement as they prepare for their next challenge. His priority will now be to maintain his fitness and gradually build the consistency that has so far eluded him at Stamford Bridge.
