Chelsea handed crucial injury boost after Man Utd win as Xabi Alonso makes honest admission

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has strengthened his position as a reliable first-team option after producing a series of encouraging performances, allowing the club to avoid rushing Emiliano Martínez back from injury.

According to Football London on Monday, November 2, 2026, the 21-year-old Belgian has shown that he can cope with the demands of senior football following his recent opportunities under manager Xabi Alonso. His progress has given Chelsea greater confidence as they manage Martínez’s recovery from a fractured jaw.

Penders was promoted to the starting lineup after Martínez sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on October 17. The Belgian was suddenly required to take on regular first-team responsibilities, but his introduction was not entirely smooth.

His first major Premier League outing proved difficult when Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. During the match, Penders made an unfortunate error by punching a corner into his own goal, allowing Tottenham to take the lead at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the costly mistake, Alonso continued to trust the young goalkeeper. Rather than immediately dropping him, the Chelsea manager encouraged Penders to treat the experience as part of his development and learn from the setback.

That backing appears to have paid off, with the Belgian showing noticeable improvement in subsequent appearances. His performance against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup provided an early indication of his growing confidence. Penders made several important saves during the contest and denied Ryan Gravenberch from the penalty spot in the shootout, although Chelsea eventually lost the tie.

He followed that display with another impressive outing against Manchester United, helping the Blues secure a 2-0 victory and keep a clean sheet. His contribution included several important interventions that prevented United from finding a route back into the match.

One of his most memorable moments came late in the game when Bryan Mbeumo unleashed a powerful long-range effort. Penders reacted quickly, producing an excellent fingertip save that redirected the ball onto the crossbar and preserved Chelsea’s advantage.

Alonso was pleased with the goalkeeper’s recent consistency and specifically referenced his displays against Liverpool and Manchester United. The manager explained that Penders had been dependable in both matches and demonstrated the level required to compete for a regular place.

He said the Belgian had delivered a stable performance against Liverpool before maintaining that standard in the victory over United. Alonso also welcomed another clean sheet, noting that it was Penders’ second in three matches.

The Chelsea boss further described the goalkeeper’s response to his earlier mistake as an important part of professional development. He stressed that players must learn to overcome difficult moments rather than allow them to affect their confidence.

Meanwhile, Martínez is reportedly making encouraging progress in his rehabilitation and could return sooner than initially anticipated. However, the Argentina international may have to wear a protective mask when he resumes competitive football to guard against further injury.

With Penders becoming increasingly assured, Chelsea have little immediate reason to accelerate Martínez’s return. The Belgian’s performances have provided Alonso with a dependable temporary solution, allowing the club to focus on ensuring that their experienced goalkeeper makes a complete recovery before returning to action.

Penders’ recent displays have therefore offered Chelsea both short-term stability and encouragement about the young goalkeeper’s development.
