Former Premier League manager Neil Warnock has questioned Manchester United’s transfer priorities after the club failed to sign Ezri Konsa before the defender joined Arsenal for £55 million last summer. According to a report by Metro on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Warnock believes United should have focused more heavily on strengthening their defence instead of directing so much of their recruitment effort towards midfield.
Konsa has made an encouraging start to his Arsenal career, becoming an important part of Mikel Arteta’s side. The 29-year-old has settled quickly into the team and contributed to the Gunners’ strong opening to the Premier League season. Arsenal have won eight of their first nine league matches, with Konsa contributing to that run.
United, by contrast, have struggled to produce consistent results, with weaknesses in their defence raising questions about the decisions made during the summer transfer window. Warnock believes the club should have recognised the need for an experienced defender and acted accordingly, particularly given their financial resources and Konsa’s availability.
The former manager’s criticism centres on what he considers an imbalance in United’s recruitment. While the club invested significantly in midfield reinforcements, he feels they did not give the defensive department sufficient attention. In his view, strengthening one area of the squad should not come at the expense of another position that is clearly in need of improvement.
Warnock argued that United’s recruitment team should have identified the problems affecting the side and targeted players capable of resolving them. Konsa, in his assessment, represented the type of established defender who could have addressed some of those concerns. His move to Arsenal has therefore become an example in the wider debate about whether United made the right choices in the transfer market.
He also cautioned that the club could continue to experience difficulties unless its approach to recruitment changes. Warnock pointed to Brighton and Bournemouth as examples of teams whose recruitment operations have produced more effective outcomes.
The comments echo criticism from former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who has also expressed the view that Konsa would have been an excellent addition to his former club. Ferdinand praised the defender’s smooth transition to Arsenal and the quality of his displays since arriving in north London.
Konsa’s performances have given Arteta valuable options in defence, particularly while Saliba has been unavailable. His ability to establish himself quickly has reinforced the impression that Arsenal made a successful investment in a player capable of contributing immediately.
For United, the situation has renewed scrutiny of their summer priorities. The club’s defensive shortcomings remain a concern, and Warnock’s remarks underline the argument that a dependable centre-back should have been among their main targets. Although the transfer window decision cannot now be reversed, Konsa’s start at Arsenal has provided a clear point of comparison. The criticism ultimately raises questions about whether United’s recruitment strategy as they plan their next recruitment decisions has addressed the squad’s most pressing needs, or whether important defensive issues were overlooked while resources were committed elsewhere.
