Portugal to Hire New Manager For Cristiano Ronaldo Farewell After Jorge Jesus Fallout

According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo could have a different manager overseeing his final appearance for Portugal following reports of a disagreement with current coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41year old forward recently announced his decision to retire from international football after tensions reportedly developed between him and Jesus over the manager's decision to leave him out of Portugal's September encounter against Norway.

Ronaldo was said to be unhappy with the decision and subsequently left the national team camp before deciding to bring his remarkable international career to an end.

However, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star could still receive an opportunity to make one final appearance for his country before officially retiring from international football.

According to ESPN, Jesus is unlikely to take charge of Portugal during the proposed farewell appearance because of his reported disagreement with Ronaldo. Another experienced manager could therefore be appointed to oversee the occasion.

Former Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has emerged as a possible candidate. The Brazilian coach handed Ronaldo his international debut in 2003 and developed a close relationship with the forward during their time together.

Their relationship reportedly became particularly strong after Scolari supported Ronaldo following the death of his father when the footballer was just 20 years old.

Meanwhile, former Portugal manager Fernando Santos is reportedly not being considered for the occasion. Despite working together between 2014 and 2022, their relationship deteriorated following Ronaldo's reduced playing time during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ronaldo made his international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003 and finished his Portugal career with 234 appearances and 146 goals. His achievements include winning Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Announcing his retirement, Ronaldo described the decision as difficult, explaining that it involved both his mind and emotions.

He also reflected on the privilege of representing Portugal and the responsibility of wearing the national team's famous number seven shirt.

Despite their reported disagreement, Jesus publicly acknowledged Ronaldo's extraordinary contribution to Portuguese football, describing him as a global icon and an inspiration to younger generations.

The manager also expressed respect for the forward's decision, recognising that Ronaldo would always hold a special place in the hearts of Portuguese supporters.
