'We would win now' - Emiliano Martinez makes bold claim about World Cup final defeat to Spain

According to a report by GOAL on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has expressed confidence that Argentina would defeat Spain if the two national teams met again, despite his country's painful loss in the recent World Cup final.

Argentina suffered a heartbreaking extra-time defeat against Spain, with Torres scoring the only goal to hand Luis de la Fuente's side victory and the world title.

However, Martinez believes Lionel Scaloni's team are currently stronger and would emerge victorious if given another opportunity to face the European champions.

Speaking during an interview with journalist Gaston Edul, the 34-year-old goalkeeper acknowledged Spain's quality but insisted that he remains confident in Argentina's ability to beat them.

"I knew the players of the Spanish national football team were very good. But, I don't know, I felt and feel currently that we beat them if we play now," Martinez said.

The Argentine also compared Spain's current squad with the France team that his country defeated in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

Martinez explained that he had greater respect for France ahead of that final because of the team's experience and previous achievements on the international stage.

The Chelsea goalkeeper played a significant role in Argentina's 2022 triumph, making crucial saves before helping his country secure victory over France in a penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, Martinez is currently recovering from a fractured jaw that required surgery following Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton.

The injury has kept him out of action, with the Argentine concentrating on his rehabilitation as he works towards returning to the Chelsea squad.
