According to a report by sky sports on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Guinness World Records has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following the Portuguese forward's announcement that he will retire from international football, bringing an end to his remarkable 23 year career with the national team.
In a post shared on its official X account on Thursday, the record keeping organisation celebrated Ronaldo's extraordinary achievements, noting that he retires as the most-capped player in men's international football history, with 234 appearances, and the highest goalscorer with 146 goals.
The 41year old announced his decision in a video posted on social media, explaining that he believed it was time to pass Portugal's iconic number seven shirt to the next generation of players.
"I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it," Ronaldo said.
He admitted that reaching the decision had not been easy, explaining that certain choices require both emotional and rational consideration.
Ronaldo made his international debut for Portugal in August 2003 and gradually established himself as one of the greatest players in the country's football history. He eventually captained the national team to its first major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship.
He also played an important role in Portugal's UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025, further strengthening his legacy as one of the most successful players to represent the country.
His retirement announcement ends weeks of speculation surrounding his international future following reported tensions with coach Jorge Jesus. The situation emerged after the Al Nassr forward left the national team camp in September after being excluded from the starting line up, triggering discussions about a possible disagreement and disciplinary consequences.
However, Ronaldo dismissed retirement speculation in an October statement, insisting that he remained committed to Portugal and available for selection as long as he was physically fit.
His final appearance for the national team came in a 1-0 Nations League victory over Wales on September 24.
Meanwhile, Portugal are reportedly preparing a special farewell ceremony to honour the legendary forward, whose international achievements have made him an enduring figure in the country's sporting history.
