Xabi Alonso might have dropped big hint over Estevao change after Chelsea star dazzles vs Man Utd

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Xabi Alonso faces a major selection decision ahead of Chelsea's Premier League trip to Sunderland, with Estevao Willian hoping to keep his place in the starting line-up after an impressive display against Manchester United.

Alonso is weighing up whether to start the Brazilian youngster again or leave him among the substitutes because of Sunderland's physical style of play and the expected intensity at the Stadium of Light.

Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

The 19-year-old delivered an impressive performance and came close to finding the net on two occasions, although both efforts were ruled out.

His display has prompted Chelsea supporters to call for him to retain his place in the starting XI when the Blues travel to Wearside this weekend.

However, Alonso must also consider the different challenges Sunderland are likely to pose. Regis Le Bris' side have developed a reputation for their physical approach, with their players ranking among the Premier League's most successful teams in duels this season.

Before the weekend, Sunderland had won 468 duels, placing them behind only Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Brentford, Leeds United and Tottenham in that category. Chelsea were not far behind, having recorded 464 successful duels.

The physical demands of the encounter could therefore play a role in Alonso's decision, particularly considering his previous comments about Estevao's adaptation to English football.

Following Chelsea's defeat to Liverpool, the manager explained why the youngster had not been a regular starter.

"Yes, we know that the Premier League and the game in England is really intense. You need to be up for it.

"Este has played, for sure, it's his second season. But he had the injury and he's in that process. Trust me, I'm sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role."

Despite those concerns, Alonso was impressed with the Brazilian's response against Manchester United and praised his attitude after missing out on previous starting opportunities.

"He has had the best response to show that he deserves more, that he was prepared and that's what you want from a football player, so I'm very happy for him."

The Chelsea manager also recognised the connection Estevao built with the supporters and the determination he showed throughout the match.

With Chelsea looking to secure another important Premier League victory, Alonso must now decide whether to reward the teenager with consecutive starts or select a different combination better suited to Sunderland's physical approach.
