He’s a Quick Player – New Super Eagles Defender Receives High Praise After Impressive Performance

According to a report by Czech media outlet Sport.cz on Monday, October 19, 2026, new Super Eagles defender Abdullahi Bewene has earned praise from Sparta Prague defender Martin Suchomel following his impressive display for Banik Ostrava in their 0-0 draw against Sparta Prague in the Czech First League on Sunday.

Bewene helped Banik Ostrava record their fourth clean sheet of the season with a solid defensive performance. His display caught the attention of Suchomel, who was responsible for marking the Nigerian right-back during the encounter at the Městský stadion – Vítkovice Aréna.

Suchomel, who played on the left side of Sparta Prague’s defence, admitted that Bewene’s speed and technical quality made the contest difficult at certain moments.

“He’s a quick player with excellent technical ability,” Suchomel said.

The Sparta Prague defender also recalled an incident in the first half when Bewene pushed the ball past him and used his pace to get away.

“I remember one moment in the first half when he knocked the ball past me and got away from me. I should have dealt with that situation better,” Suchomel admitted.

Although he acknowledged the Nigerian’s attacking qualities, Suchomel insisted that he had handled several other situations effectively throughout the match.

“I knew what to expect from him, but I think I defended well at times,” he added.

Bewene’s contribution was also evident in his defensive statistics. The Banik Ostrava number 34 registered one interception, one clearance and four recoveries against Sparta Prague.

The Nigerian won five of his six ground duels and was not dribbled past during the encounter. However, he lost his only aerial duel and failed to register a successful tackle or blocked shot.

The goalless draw allowed Banik Ostrava to secure another clean sheet, with Bewene playing his part in containing one of the Czech First League’s competing sides.

Suchomel’s praise further highlights the qualities the Nigerian defender has demonstrated since joining Banik Ostrava, particularly his pace, technical ability and confidence when taking on opposing players.

Bewene has also earned recognition on the international stage, with his performances for the Czech club helping him secure a place in the Super Eagles squad under head coach Eric Chelle.

The defender made his senior international debut for Nigeria in a 2-2 friendly draw against Poland in June 2026.

As he continues to develop at Banik Ostrava, Bewene will be looking to maintain his impressive form and establish himself as a regular contributor at both club and international levels.
