According to a report by Madrid Universal on Friday, October 30, 2026, Real Madrid are adopting a patient approach to Sergio Martinez's development, with the teenage midfielder still waiting to make his first-team debut despite arriving at the club with high expectations.
Los Blancos reportedly regard the €3 million signing as a long-term investment and are unwilling to rush his progress under manager Jose Mourinho.
Martinez caught Real Madrid's attention after helping Racing secure promotion to La Liga. He also made his debut in the Spanish top flight, scoring during his first appearance.
His performances impressed the Spanish giants, who eventually completed his signing after monitoring his development for some time.
Following his arrival, Martinez initially trained with Mourinho's senior squad and was even included in a first-team matchday group.
However, he has since been moved to Real Madrid Castilla, where he is continuing his development under coach Julian Lopez de Lerma.
The decision forms part of the club's plan to help the youngster adapt to his new surroundings and gain valuable experience before making the transition to the senior team.
Martinez has also had to adjust to a different level of competition after moving from Racing to Real Madrid's reserve side, which competes in Primera Federacion, also known as First RFEF.
He must become familiar with a new city, the club's footballing philosophy and the expectations that come with representing one of Europe's biggest clubs.
Despite his current situation, Real Madrid remain satisfied with his potential and are continuing to monitor his progress.
The report describes his €3 million transfer as a four-year development project, with the club prepared to give him sufficient time to improve before considering a regular role in the first team.
Mourinho is also determined to avoid rushing another young talent, with Martinez's development reportedly drawing comparisons with Franco Mastantuono's early integration into the senior environment.
Real Madrid want the midfielder to establish himself at Castilla, improve his consistency and become comfortable with the demands of playing for the club before receiving more first-team opportunities.
Although Martinez has already gained senior experience at Racing, the Spanish giants believe his development requires careful management.
For now, his immediate priority is to impress at Castilla as he continues working towards making his competitive debut for Mourinho's first team.
