Asamoah Gyan Eyes GFA Presidency As Ghana Football Prepares for 2027 Elections

According to a report by Asaase News on Monday October 26, 2026, Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has emerged as a potential contender for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), raising expectations ahead of the association’s next election, scheduled for 2027.

The development has added a high-profile name to the growing conversation about the future leadership of Ghana football, with uncertainty surrounding the plans of the incumbent GFA president, Kurt Okraku, who is reportedly unlikely to seek a third term in office.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, has yet to officially announce his intention to contest the position.

However, his name is increasingly being mentioned among personalities who could compete for the influential role as stakeholders begin to consider possible changes in the administration of the country’s football.

The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker is one of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers, having represented the country at several FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He also holds the distinction of being Africa’s leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Gyan has maintained links with football administration under Okraku’s leadership. He has undertaken various roles within the current administration and serves as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams.

His experience and popularity could make him a significant figure in the upcoming presidential contest should he decide to enter the race.

The possible emergence of Gyan comes at a time when questions are being raised about Okraku’s future as GFA president.

At its 2025 Congress held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the association amended its statutes and constitution to extend the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.

The amendment generated speculation that Okraku, who also serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), could pursue another mandate.

However, his administration has faced growing scrutiny following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco, marking the first time in more than two decades that the national team had missed the continental competition.

These developments have intensified discussions about the direction of Ghana football and the leadership required to address its challenges.

Gyan is not the only football figure whose name has surfaced in discussions about the next GFA presidency.

Football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United chief executive officer Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain André Ayew have also been mentioned as potential contenders.

Annim Addo has previously served on the GFA Executive Council and remains involved in club football. He is also associated with Gyan as his manager.

Gyambrah brings experience from regional football administration, having previously chaired the Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association, while Amande heads Karela United and has previously attempted to secure a position on the GFA Executive Council.

Ayew, a member of Ghana’s historic team that won the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, has enjoyed an extensive career with the Black Stars and several clubs. He currently serves as the chief executive officer of Nania FC.

A former GFA vice-president is also expected to enter the contest, potentially making the election a competitive battle among experienced football administrators and former players.

Despite the growing speculation surrounding his possible candidacy, Gyan has not formally declared that he intends to contest the GFA presidency.

The former Black Stars captain has previously spoken about the possibility of leading the association. In an interview in April 2022, he acknowledged that becoming GFA president was something he could consider in the future.

“I don’t know. It might be possible. I haven’t thought about it. There are a lot of people who call me and tell me that I can be the FA President one day,” he said at the time.

His earlier comments have renewed interest in the possibility of him transitioning from his celebrated playing career into football administration.

For now, the intentions of the prospective candidates remain a major talking point as Ghanaian football stakeholders await further clarity on the electoral process.

The GFA has yet to announce the official timetable and nomination procedures for the 2027 presidential election. Until then, it remains uncertain whether Gyan will formally join the race or whether Okraku will seek another term.

Nevertheless, the possibility of the former Ghana captain entering the contest has added fresh intrigue to the debate over who should lead the country's football governing body in the coming years.
