According to a report by Football Transfers on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly preparing to battle Liverpool for the signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha next year, despite making significant investments in their squad during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils strengthened their midfield by bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. However, United remain keen to improve their options in the middle of the pitch and have renewed their interest in the Germany international ahead of another potential spending spree.
Nmecha, 26, has established himself as one of Europe’s impressive midfielders in recent seasons. His performances for Borussia Dortmund, alongside an influential World Cup campaign with Germany, attracted interest from several Premier League clubs during the previous summer transfer window.
However, signing the midfielder could prove costly. According to TEAMtalk, Dortmund view Nmecha as a key part of their long-term plans under manager Niko Kovac, particularly after he extended his contract in March.
The report suggests that Manchester United and Liverpool are considering moves for the midfielder next year, with United having already made contact over a possible January transfer. Dortmund could demand around €100 million to allow him to leave during the winter window.
Several other Premier League clubs have also monitored Nmecha over the past year. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly assessed the player, although United and Liverpool appear to be leading the race at this stage.
Nmecha’s contract reportedly includes an €80 million release clause, but the provision will not become active until next summer. This means any club hoping to sign him in January would likely have to negotiate a higher transfer fee with Dortmund.
The midfielder has scored twice in ten appearances across all competitions this season. His Estimated Transfer Value has also reached a career-high €58.5 million following his impressive performances for Dortmund since the beginning of 2026.
Despite Manchester United’s reported interest, a move to Old Trafford remains uncertain. Michael Carrick already has Baleba, Santos, Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and the injured Manuel Ugarte as midfield options.
United also have more pressing priorities ahead of next summer, with strengthening the left-back position reportedly their main objective. The club are also looking to recruit a centre-back and could pursue a new centre-forward, potentially making an expensive midfield signing less likely.
