2026 FIFA U-17 WWC: How the tallest player of the competition Ijirigho helped Nigeria beat Mexico

Jane Ijirigho, the tallest player participating in the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, delivered an outstanding performance as Nigeria’s Flamingos defeated Mexico 2-1 to advance to the quarter-finals in Morocco.

The 1.92-metre goalkeeper played a significant role in securing the Round of 16 victory, making several crucial saves that prevented Mexico from taking control of the contest and helped Nigeria protect their lead.

Ijirigho demonstrated her importance early in the match when Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes threatened to score just six minutes after kick-off. Reyes, who had registered two goals during the group stage, created an opportunity to shoot from inside the Nigerian penalty area. However, Ijirigho responded with a quick reaction, diving low to keep the effort out.

The goalkeeper continued to make important interventions as Mexico searched for an equaliser. One of her most impressive moments came when she stretched to redirect Kemberly Garcia’s powerful long-range attempt onto the crossbar, denying the Mexican side another opportunity to score.

Her contribution became particularly important as Nigeria faced a late push from their opponents. Despite Mexico’s efforts to recover, the Flamingos maintained their advantage and secured qualification for the last eight.

Nigeria head coach Akeem Busari praised Ijirigho’s performances, describing her as an exceptional goalkeeper who had consistently delivered for the national team. He also highlighted her strong mentality, commitment and determination to contribute to Nigeria’s success.

Defender Azeezat Oduntan equally acknowledged the goalkeeper’s display after the final whistle, expressing her admiration for the important role she played in the victory.

Ijirigho welcomed the opportunity to make decisive saves but emphasised that Nigeria’s progress was the result of a collective team effort. She praised her teammates for their performance, unity and confidence in their abilities.

The victory keeps Nigeria’s campaign alive as the Flamingos prepare for their quarter-final challenge.
