Forgotten Super Eagles Goalkeeper Helps Club Secure Victory

Forgotten Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho helped Omonia 29 Maiou record a 1-0 victory over Anorthosis Famagusta in the Cypriot First Division on Sunday.

The Nigerian shot-stopper started the encounter and completed the entire 90 minutes as his team secured all three points. Uzoho played an important role in preserving Omonia’s slender advantage, while fellow Nigerian Kelechi Nwakali also featured in the match.

Omonia broke the deadlock in the 37th minute through Anestis Vlachomitros, who had replaced Panagiotis Zachariou in the 23rd minute.

Vlachomitros' strike proved to be the difference between the two sides at the Makario Stadium, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Match statistics showed that Omonia controlled 52 per cent of possession and earned six corners, while Anorthosis recorded 48 per cent possession and two corner kicks.

Both teams created opportunities throughout the contest, but the home side managed to protect its advantage until the final whistle.

Omonia made several substitutions after the break in an effort to preserve their lead, while Anorthosis also introduced fresh players as they searched for an equaliser.

However, the visitors failed to find a breakthrough, allowing Uzoho to complete the match without conceding a goal.

The result represented an important boost for Omonia as they continued their domestic campaign. The victory gave the team an opportunity to build momentum, while the clean sheet provided encouragement for the club's defensive unit.

For Uzoho, the appearance offered another chance to maintain his match fitness and confidence as he continues his professional career in Cyprus.

The 27-year-old has previously represented Nigeria at senior international level, including at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

His continued involvement in club football could improve his chances of returning to the Super Eagles setup. However, any potential recall will depend on his performances, consistency and the decisions of the national team's coaching staff.

Uzoho will be hoping to build on his latest clean sheet by producing more impressive displays for Omonia as he works towards reviving his international career.
