Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed enormous confidence in his midfield options, declaring that his country has the two best central midfielders in world football as Martin Zubimendi prepares to take on greater responsibility following Rodri’s injury.
According to a report by GOAL on Saturday, November 7, 2026, De la Fuente made the statement while discussing Spain’s preparations for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against the Czech Republic and England.
Rodri’s absence has created a significant gap in Spain’s midfield, with the Manchester City star unavailable for the November international matches. Dani Olmo is also missing, forcing the national team manager to make adjustments to his squad.
Despite these setbacks, De la Fuente believes Spain still possess exceptional quality in midfield, particularly with Arsenal’s Zubimendi available for selection.
“For me, we have the two best midfielders: Rodri and Zubimendi. Martin, even though he doesn't play [every minute], always performs at a high level for us,” the Spain manager said.
He also praised the midfielder’s commitment, work rate and continued development, expressing confidence that he would make an important contribution during the international break.
“My approach to morale is based on optimism. I see Zubimendi as someone who works very hard and continues to improve. Martin will be incredibly fresh for these matches,” he added.
Meanwhile, De la Fuente has recalled Real Betis midfielder Marc Roca to strengthen his options following Rodri’s injury. The midfielder has impressed with his performances at club level, and his familiarity with Spain’s tactical approach was reportedly an important factor behind his selection.
“Marc Roca is one of the players who has been with us for a long time, and we're really looking forward to seeing him again. And he knows our system perfectly,” De la Fuente explained.
Roca was selected ahead of Under 21 prospects Chema Andres and Marc Bernal, with the manager favouring an experienced player who already understands the demands of international football.
Zubimendi and Roca will join Fabian Ruiz, Pedri, Mikel Merino, Fermin Lopez and Pablo Barrios in Spain’s midfield group.
Spain will travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic on November 12 before hosting England three days later. De la Fuente’s team will aim to extend their 11 match winning streak and strengthen their position at the top of Nations League Group A4.
With Rodri unavailable, Zubimendi is expected to play a crucial role in controlling the midfield as Spain attempt to maintain their impressive form.
