According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha will not face any additional disciplinary action from UEFA despite briefly returning to the pitch after being sent off during the club’s dramatic Champions League comeback victory over Roma.
The Brazilian striker played a crucial role in United’s remarkable recovery after they fell 2-0 behind. Cunha scored twice in the closing stages, finding the net in the 83rd and 86th minutes to complete the comeback and secure a memorable victory for Michael Carrick’s side.
However, his celebrations were interrupted when he received two yellow cards and was sent off. Following his dismissal, the 27 year old watched the remainder of the match from a billboard near the pitch.
After the final whistle, Cunha returned to the field to celebrate with his teammates and supporters in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. Carrick quickly noticed his presence and instructed him to leave the playing area.
Before heading towards the tunnel, the forward applauded supporters at the Stretford End. Although his decision to return briefly raised concerns, UEFA has reportedly confirmed that no further punishment will be imposed.
A UEFA official explained that because Cunha’s return to the pitch was not included in the official match reports, there was no basis for extending his suspension or opening a disciplinary investigation.
As a result, the forward will serve only the automatic one match suspension resulting from his two yellow cards. He will therefore miss Manchester United’s upcoming Champions League fixture against Sporting later this month.
Despite the controversy surrounding his dismissal, Carrick recognised Cunha’s importance to the comeback. The United manager had adjusted his position during the break, replacing Bryan Mbeumo with Cunha and giving the Brazilian greater freedom to operate centrally.
The tactical change proved effective, with Cunha becoming more influential and scoring the two decisive goals. Carrick was particularly impressed by his determination, attacking quality and energy during United’s impressive second-half performance.
