According to a report by Football London on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is expected to remain calm over Pep Chavarria’s injury concern ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, with Jorrel Hato proving he can provide a reliable alternative.
Hato impressed during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton last weekend after Chavarria was forced to withdraw from the matchday squad because of a minor injury.
The Netherlands international started at left wing-back and played an important role in helping Chelsea secure their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months.
The 20-year-old also made an impact in attack, producing a powerful run into the penalty area before delivering a cross that allowed Pedro Neto to open the scoring at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Hato will be hoping to retain his place when Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, particularly if Chavarria fails to recover in time.
The defender has endured a difficult start under Alonso after being dropped following a costly mistake during Chelsea’s draw with Hull City last month. He subsequently missed the defeat to Brentford before the international break.
However, his impressive display against Everton could strengthen his chances of earning another opportunity as Chelsea prepare for the London derby.
Alonso is expected to provide an update on Chavarria’s fitness during his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Chelsea will also be without goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who underwent surgery for a fractured jaw after sustaining the injury during the victory over Everton.
Mike Penders replaced Martinez during that match and is expected to make his full Premier League debut against Tottenham.
Alonso praised the Belgian goalkeeper’s performance against Everton, expressing confidence in his ability to step up when called upon.
"He did well. You could see what's about Emi, his personality, he's brave, and we have full trust with him," the Chelsea manager said.
He added: "He played in the cup games, and whenever he's needed, like the other players, whenever they are needed, they can perform, like Jorrel."
Alonso also praised Hato’s contribution, saying: "He did really well today as well, coming in the first game after the little problem with Pep.
"This is all about the squad, so that all the players feel important, that they will have their moment whenever they are needed, and that's very positive as well."
