According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, October 30, 2026, Manchester United have shown interest in Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as they continue searching for reinforcements in the position, although no formal negotiations have been opened.
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio MARCA, United have also considered Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios as they look for a player with similar qualities.
However, neither player has become the subject of a serious transfer pursuit, with United's interest reportedly remaining at an exploratory stage.
Reports indicate that Manchester United held meetings during their visit to Madrid for their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. During one of those discussions, the possibility of signing Fermin was reportedly raised.
United could consider strengthening their midfield because of their current difficulties and the uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Fernandes.
However, convincing Barcelona to sell Fermin would be difficult because of his importance to the team. The Catalan club are unlikely to sanction the 23-year-old's departure given his growing influence in the squad.
Fermin established himself in Barcelona's first team during the 2023–24 season under Xavi Hernandez after progressing through the club's La Masia academy.
Since then, he has continued to develop into an important attacking option for the Spanish giants.
The midfielder has made 12 appearances across all competitions this season, recording a goal and an assist. His contributions have further strengthened his position in Barcelona's attacking setup.
Barcelona previously dismissed Chelsea's interest in signing Fermin in 2025, while the club later extended his contract until 2031 in January this year.
The Spain international has also repeatedly made his desire to remain at Barcelona clear. Representing the club has been a lifelong ambition, and he has expressed his wish to spend his entire career at Camp Nou.
Considering his importance to the squad, long-term contract and commitment to Barcelona, Manchester United could find it difficult to secure his signature.
For now, Barcelona are expected to retain the midfielder as they continue to count on his contribution to the team.
