Alonso In Dreamland As Chelsea Handed £20m Discount On Priority Target

Chelsea could have an opportunity to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott for more than £20 million below his previously reported valuation when the January transfer window opens. FootballTransfers reported on Friday, October 16, 2026, that Bournemouth may consider offers exceeding £80 million for the 23-year-old, having previously placed his price at approximately £100 million.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has made Scott a priority target after the club failed with three bids for the England international before the September transfer deadline. The Blues had initially been expected to revisit the deal next summer, as Bournemouth were unwilling to lose a key player during the middle of the season.

However, the south-coast club have reportedly become more open to a potential transfer following discussions with Scott’s representatives. The midfielder has also turned down a contract extension that would have made him Bournemouth’s highest-paid player, adding to speculation that he could leave in 2027.

With his current agreement running until 2028, Bournemouth still have some negotiating leverage. Nevertheless, their reported willingness to consider offers above £80 million could give Chelsea a more affordable route to completing the transfer than the previously discussed £100 million figure.

Chelsea are believed to be leading the race for Scott, although Liverpool could emerge as serious competitors when the January window opens. Any renewed pursuit is likely to depend on Bournemouth’s final valuation and the level of interest from other clubs.

Scott’s recent performances for England have further strengthened his reputation. He made his senior international debut against Czechia before impressing again during England’s emphatic 7-0 victory over Croatia.

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised the midfielder’s display, highlighting his composure in possession, confidence, decision-making and contribution without the ball. Tuchel also pointed to the movement and energy Scott brought to the centre of the pitch, describing his overall performance in highly positive terms.

The midfielder’s growing influence at international level could increase competition for his signature and reinforce Chelsea’s determination to secure a deal.

Scott is currently recovering from a thigh injury sustained while representing England. Despite the setback, he has established himself as an important figure at Bournemouth, making 95 appearances since joining the club.

Chelsea must now weigh the financial opportunity against the competition for the player and his current fitness situation. If Bournemouth maintain their reported position, the January window could provide an important opening for Alonso’s side to pursue one of their leading midfield targets.
