Sunday, November 8, 2026 – Manchester United claimed an important 1-0 away victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Women's Super League, thanks to a second-half goal from substitute Julia Zigiotti Olme. The Swedish midfielder came off the bench to deliver the winning goal for Marc Skinner's team, extending their unbeaten league record to seven consecutive matches.
Manchester United began the encounter with confidence, controlling possession and creating several attacking opportunities. However, despite their early dominance, the visitors struggled to find the back of the net as Aston Villa worked hard to keep them under control.
Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma played a crucial role in keeping her team level during the opening 45 minutes. She produced five important saves to frustrate United's attacking players and prevent them from taking the lead. Hinata Miyazawa nearly opened the scoring with a powerful attempt from about 20 yards, but her effort struck the crossbar.
Aston Villa found it difficult to produce meaningful attacking opportunities in the first half. Their first effort on target arrived in the 45th minute through Lucia Kendall. However, Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce handled the attempt comfortably, ensuring that the teams entered the interval with the score still at 0-0.
Following the restart, Aston Villa returned with a stronger attacking approach and began putting more pressure on the visitors. The home side created better opportunities as they searched for the opening goal. Nevertheless, Tullis-Joyce remained impressive between the posts, making important saves to stop attempts from Amalie Vangsgaard and Oriane Jean-Francois.
Manchester United eventually broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute through Zigiotti Olme. The Swedish midfielder, who had started the match on the substitutes' bench, connected with a well-delivered cross from her compatriot Hanna Lundkvist to send a header into the net.
The winning goal followed an impressive attacking contribution from another substitute, Andrea Medina. She advanced with the ball and attracted two Aston Villa defenders before making a pass to Lundkvist, who had moved into a promising position.
Lundkvist then sent a deep delivery into the penalty area, where Zigiotti Olme positioned herself perfectly to meet the cross. The midfielder rose without facing any defensive challenge and directed her header beyond the goalkeeper to give Manchester United the advantage.
After taking the lead, United concentrated on protecting their advantage and preventing Aston Villa from finding an equaliser. The visitors remained organised throughout the closing stages and successfully maintained their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The result handed Manchester United all three points and extended their unbeaten run in the Women's Super League to seven matches. It also highlighted the importance of their substitutes, as Medina and Zigiotti Olme combined to produce the decisive moment.
Although Aston Villa improved considerably in the second half, their efforts were insufficient to change the outcome. Okuma's impressive saves had kept the hosts competitive, but United's persistence eventually secured a valuable victory away from home.
