According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday, October 29, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has expressed confidence in Jose Mourinho’s ability to restore Real Madrid’s position among Europe’s leading clubs, insisting that the Portuguese manager possesses the personality and determination required to overcome the challenges facing the Spanish giants.

Herrera, who worked under Mourinho during their time at Manchester United, has offered an insight into the manager’s demanding style and explained why he believes his approach could benefit Real Madrid.

Speaking on the El Camino de Mario podcast, as reported by SPORT, the Spanish midfielder described Mourinho as a coach who places great importance on discipline, character and accountability. According to Herrera, the Portuguese manager expects players to accept criticism and understand their responsibilities within the team.

“For me, Mou is a manager who builds character. He comes from a style of football where players weren’t easily offended,” Herrera said.

“Criticism was accepted, understood, and the pecking order was respected.”

The former United midfielder also recalled an incident following a Europa League match against Saint-Etienne during Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford. Herrera explained that the manager openly criticised his performance in front of the squad but maintained a positive relationship with him afterwards.

“I remember a match after the Saint-Etienne game in the Europa League when he came up to me in front of everyone and told me it had been a disaster and so on… and well, the next day we had a hug,” he added.

Herrera’s recollections suggest that Mourinho’s demanding personality does not necessarily create lasting divisions between him and his players. Instead, the Spaniard believes the manager’s approach can establish discipline, mutual respect and high standards.

Mourinho now faces the challenge of building a competitive Real Madrid side capable of consistently challenging for major trophies. The club is also adjusting to the departure of midfield legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, whose contributions defined an important period in its history.

Herrera believes Mourinho has the experience and character to guide the team through this transition, particularly with Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, providing strong competition.

The Portuguese manager previously enjoyed considerable success during his first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, helping Madrid challenge Barcelona during one of the most competitive periods in Spanish football.

Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 victory over Barcelona, featuring a brace from Kylian Mbappe, has provided further encouragement. However, maintaining that level of performance throughout the season will be essential if Mourinho is to fulfil the expectations surrounding his return.
