According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea could make further defensive additions during the January transfer window, with Pep Chavarria facing an uncertain future amid reports linking the club with Brentford left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Chelsea and Liverpool have reportedly opened discussions over a possible deal for the Senegal international, who joined Brentford from West Ham United for £40 million last summer.
Xabi Alonso strengthened his defence significantly during the previous transfer window, signing Emi Martinez, Chavarria, Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix. However, injuries to Martinez and Lacroix have affected the manager's plans.
Chavarria has also found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter, with the left-back position shared between him and Jorrel Hato.
Palestra's selection in that role during Chelsea's recent match against Manchester United, despite being naturally right-footed, has further increased uncertainty over Alonso's preferred options.
Meanwhile, Diouf has become a potential January target after impressing with his pace, physical presence and attacking ability.
His statistics from the 2025-26 season show that he recorded more clearances, aerial duels won and successful crosses per 90 minutes than Chavarria. However, the Chelsea defender produced better numbers for tackles and recoveries.
Brentford are unlikely to be willing to lose a player they signed only a few months ago, although a substantial offer could make them reconsider their position.
Chelsea's reported interest in another left-back suggests that Alonso wants to increase competition in the position despite the club's significant investment during the summer transfer window.
For Chavarria, the situation presents another challenge as he looks to establish himself at Stamford Bridge and convince Alonso that he can become a dependable long-term option at left-back.
