According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, former England internationals Theo Walcott and Steven Gerrard have backed Jordan Henderson, insisting that the Chelsea midfielder deserves greater recognition for his performances.
The two former players believe Henderson should be valued for more than his role in the squad, particularly following his impressive display in Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth.
Henderson, 36, joined Chelsea during the summer transfer window, with expectations that his leadership and experience would help strengthen Xabi Alonso’s young team.
However, his performance against Bournemouth demonstrated that he still has plenty to offer on the pitch. The midfielder scored twice and provided an assist to help Chelsea secure an emphatic victory.
Gerrard, who previously captained Liverpool, had earlier defended Henderson against suggestions that Chelsea signed him primarily to mentor younger players. He argued that such claims overlooked the midfielder’s continued ability to contribute on the pitch.
Walcott has now expressed similar sentiments by naming Henderson his player of the week. The former Arsenal winger praised his talent, experience and growing relationship with Chelsea teammate Cole Palmer.
"Jordan Henderson, the most seasoned player in that Chelsea locker room in the Premier League, but also, many people overlook his amazing talent," Walcott remarked.
He also highlighted the developing understanding between Henderson and Palmer, noting that the pair appeared to be enjoying playing together.
Henderson’s influence was further reflected in his performance against Bournemouth, where he covered 11.9 kilometres while scoring twice and providing an assist.
His work rate and contribution in possession could make him an important option for Alonso as Chelsea navigate a demanding campaign.
However, Henderson may not start every match if Chelsea strengthen their midfield during the January transfer window. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, 23, is reportedly still on the club’s transfer wish list, although a potential move would depend on an agreement over his price and competition from other interested clubs.
For now, Henderson’s recent performances have reinforced the argument that his value to Chelsea extends well beyond providing experience and leadership to younger teammates.
