According to a report by Chelsea Chronicles on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Josh Acheampong has strengthened his case for a regular starting role at Chelsea after delivering another impressive defensive performance in the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The 20-year-old was Chelsea’s most effective defender during the encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium, recording 10 defensive contributions, more than any other player on the pitch, according to Sofascore statistics.
Acheampong made six clearances and demonstrated his ability to cope with the physical demands of Premier League football. He also won six of his 10 ground duels and two of his three aerial duels.
The England Under-21 international also impressed with his passing, completing 27 of 29 attempts for an accuracy of 93 per cent. He registered a key pass, highlighting his contribution to Chelsea’s attacking build-up.
His latest performance comes as manager Xabi Alonso continues to assess his defensive options following significant investment in the squad.
Chelsea signed Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for a reported £52 million, while Wesley Fofana joined from Leicester City in a £70 million deal in 2022. Meanwhile, Acheampong and Levi Colwill progressed through the club’s academy.
Despite the availability of more expensive options, Acheampong has emerged as a strong contender for a regular place in Alonso’s back three.
The young defender has played an important role in Chelsea’s recent improvement, helping the team secure consecutive Premier League victories against Bournemouth and Everton.
Although Colwill and Lacroix remain key options, Acheampong’s consistent performances have strengthened his position in the battle for a starting place. Fofana was an unused substitute against Everton, leaving Alonso with a decision to make ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures.
Acheampong’s pace, physical strength and composure in possession make him a suitable option for the right centre-back position in Alonso’s system. His ability to defend wide areas while contributing to the team’s build-up has further enhanced his value.
Chelsea are also reportedly considering offering the youngster a new contract in recognition of his progress, although no agreement has been confirmed.
