Luis de la Fuente explains why Barcelona midfielder was left out of Spain squad

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has explained why Barcelona midfielder Gavi was omitted from his squad for the November international break, urging the youngster to maintain his efforts and continue developing if he hopes to return to the national team. According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, November 6, 2026, the coach stressed that the midfielder remains highly valued despite missing out on selection.

Gavi was one of several notable absentees when De la Fuente announced his squad on November 6 for Spain’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and England. His omission attracted attention because of his previous importance to both Barcelona and the national team, where he has established himself as a talented and influential midfielder.

However, the 22-year-old's limited involvement at Barcelona appears to have affected his chances of securing another international call-up. Under manager Hansi Flick, Gavi has struggled to earn consistent first-team opportunities, making only seven appearances across all competitions this season. He has accumulated 211 minutes and started just two matches, leaving him with limited opportunities to demonstrate the form and match sharpness required at international level.

De la Fuente addressed the decision by emphasising that Gavi continues to enjoy considerable respect within Spain's coaching setup. The manager acknowledged the midfielder's exceptional qualities but explained that selection must also recognise the performances of players who have earned places in the squad.

Speaking to SPORT, De la Fuente said: “Gavi always deserves an exception, but there are many players who could be here and aren't. Above all, out of respect for those who are here, who are the best. We love him dearly and value him highly.”

The Spain coach also delivered a message of encouragement, telling the Barcelona youngster to remain committed to improving his game. He believes Gavi can regain his place, provided he continues working hard and develops the consistency needed to compete with the country's other midfield options.

“He has to keep being himself. He knows he must keep working and developing to earn his place back here,” De la Fuente explained.

He added that returning to the squad would not be straightforward because of the high standards maintained within the national team. According to the manager, every player must continue improving to remain competitive for selection.

The comments suggest that Gavi's absence should not be viewed as the end of his international prospects. Nevertheless, he needs to regain regular football and maintain his physical condition to improve his chances of returning.

His situation at Barcelona is complicated by the number of quality midfielders available to Flick. Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, Fermín López and Rodri are among the options competing for places, increasing the difficulty of securing a regular starting position.

Although Gavi offers technical ability, energy and tactical flexibility, his limited minutes have prevented him from building consistent momentum. He can operate in different midfield roles and contribute further forward or out wide, but those qualities have not yet guaranteed him a regular place.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will still have five representatives in Spain's squad for the November fixtures. Goalkeeper Joan García, defender Pau Cubarsí, midfielders Pedri and Fermín López, and teenage winger Lamine Yamal have all received call-ups from De la Fuente.
