According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday, October 16, 2026, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is reportedly close to signing a new long-term contract that could place him among the highest-paid players in the Premier League.
Arsenal are keen to secure the Norwegian midfielder’s future following his impressive performances at the start of the 2026/27 season. The 27-year-old remains a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s plans, with the club reportedly satisfied with his recent contributions.
Negotiations between Arsenal and Odegaard’s representatives are said to be progressing positively, with both parties expecting few difficulties before reaching an agreement.
Odegaard’s current contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in the summer of 2028. However, the Gunners are determined to extend his deal to avoid uncertainty over his future in the coming years.
The midfielder joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2021, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent transfer worth approximately £30 million. Since then, he has developed into one of the club’s most influential players and established himself as captain.
Odegaard has made nearly 250 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 46 goals and providing 46 assists across all competitions. Despite experiencing recurring fitness problems in recent seasons, he has continued to play an important role in the team’s ambitions.
There had previously been speculation that Arsenal could consider selling the Norwegian international to raise funds. However, his performances and renewed importance to the squad have reportedly shifted the club’s focus towards extending his contract.
His displays at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his position, while he has also made a positive start to the current campaign, scoring four goals in 10 appearances.
Arsenal are now prioritising an agreement, with an announcement potentially expected in the coming weeks if negotiations continue smoothly.
The club’s efforts to retain their captain reflect their determination to maintain the core of the squad that won the league title last season. The move also follows Arteta’s contract extension and forms part of Arsenal’s broader strategy to keep their most important players at the Emirates Stadium.
