According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 16, 2026, Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has named Viktor Gyokeres as one of the most competitive players in Mikel Arteta’s squad, suggesting that the Swedish striker finds it particularly difficult to accept defeat.
Arteta has built a strong winning mentality at Arsenal, guiding the club to the Premier League title in the 2025/26 season. Players such as Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bukayo Saka are also known for their determination and competitive attitudes.
However, when Calafiori was asked to identify the teammate who struggles most with losing, he singled out Gyokeres, indicating that the striker takes disappointing results seriously.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP in 2025 for £55 million, with additional bonuses included in the deal. The Swedish international enjoyed an impressive start at the Emirates Stadium, scoring more than 20 goals across all competitions and contributing to the club’s success last season.
Despite his previous performances, Gyokeres has encountered difficulties during the current campaign. Kai Havertz has moved ahead of him in Arteta’s selection, increasing competition for the centre-forward position and making it harder for the Swedish striker to secure regular starts.
Gyokeres started Arsenal’s matches against Ipswich Town, Napoli and Lille but failed to score in any of the three appearances. Although the Gunners won all three games, his inability to find the net may have added to his frustration.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Calafiori acknowledged that he also dislikes losing before identifying Gyokeres as another player with a strong competitive spirit. The Italian defender considers himself among the squad’s most competitive members but suggested that the Swedish striker could take defeat even harder.
Gyokeres has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, winning league titles in each of his previous three seasons, including two with Sporting CP and one with Arsenal.
However, his place in Arteta’s starting lineup remains uncertain as he competes with Havertz for the striker role. The 27-year-old will need to make the most of his opportunities and rediscover his scoring form to strengthen his position.
The coming weeks could prove crucial for Gyokeres as Arsenal’s competition for places intensifies. Consistent goalscoring would improve his chances of becoming the club’s first-choice striker, while continued struggles could raise further questions about his role in Arteta’s long-term plans.
