Chelsea are reportedly considering a move to bring former academy defender Fikayo Tomori back to Stamford Bridge ahead of the January transfer window, although Coventry City have also emerged as a potential destination for the England international.
According to reports, Tomori’s future at AC Milan has become uncertain amid concerns about his limited playing time this season. Several Premier League clubs are said to be monitoring his situation as the defender approaches the final months of his current contract.
Tomori joined Chelsea’s academy as an Under-8 prospect and progressed through the club’s youth system before earning opportunities with the senior team. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he made 27 first-team appearances, having initially established himself under Frank Lampard.
Despite showing promise, the centre-back eventually left Chelsea in search of more consistent first-team football. His departure marked the beginning of a new chapter in Italy, where he initially joined AC Milan on loan in January before completing a permanent transfer in the summer of 2021.
Tomori subsequently became an important member of Milan’s defensive unit and contributed to the club’s success in Serie A. He has made more than 200 appearances for the Italian side, establishing himself as a familiar figure at the San Siro during his time there.
However, his position within the squad has reportedly changed, with reduced opportunities raising questions about his long-term future. Although he has featured in both of Milan’s recent Europa League matches, his involvement in Serie A has been extremely limited this season, with reports indicating that he has played only six minutes in the league.
The lack of regular domestic action could encourage the defender to consider returning to England, where he may have a better opportunity to rebuild his momentum through consistent appearances. With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, Milan could also consider offers during the January window rather than risk losing him without a transfer fee later.
Chelsea are among the clubs reportedly interested in the 28-year-old, but a potential reunion would raise questions about the club’s existing defensive options. The Blues already have several centre-backs competing for places, while their reported acquisition of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace has added further competition to the position.
Bringing Tomori back would therefore require Chelsea to consider whether he fits into their current plans and how his arrival would affect the opportunities available to other defenders. His previous experience at the club could be an advantage, although the level of interest has yet to be confirmed through an official approach.
Coventry City have also been mentioned as a possible destination, particularly because of Tomori’s previous relationship with Lampard. The manager worked with the defender during his time at Derby County and later gave him opportunities at Chelsea, meaning their existing professional connection could become relevant if Coventry pursue a deal.
The financial terms of a potential transfer remain unclear, and AC Milan have not publicly established an asking price in the reported developments. Transfermarkt estimates Tomori’s current market value at approximately £8.4 million, although that figure does not necessarily reflect the fee Milan would demand.
With January approaching, Tomori’s future could become clearer as interested clubs assess their defensive requirements and Milan consider their options. For now, Chelsea and Coventry remain among the reported possibilities, with regular playing time likely to be an important factor in the defender’s next decision.
