Kenya’s 12-time Premier League champions Tusker FC face a daunting task to keep their continental ambitions alive following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In a high-stakes first leg of the 2026–27 CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round, Julien Mette’s Brewers dominated territorial play and created promising early chances through Ian Simiyu and Victor Mbaoma.
However, the visiting Tanzanians demonstrated clinical efficiency when Congolese attacker Jeancy Mboma capitalized on a defensive opening in the 52nd minute to net the game’s only goal.
The result leaves Tusker needing an extraordinary away display in Tanzania next weekend to overturn the aggregate deficit and secure safe passage into the competition’s group phase.
The hosts started with bright intent under clear conditions at Nyayo Stadium, pressing high to dictate early proceedings.
Eugene Ikutwa created Tusker’s opening opening in the sixth minute, carving through midfield before picking out Ian Simiyu, whose heavy first touch inside the penalty area allowed Singida goalkeeper Yona Amos to collect safely.
Seven minutes later, Simiyu tested Amos with a low, driving effort following a clever combination between Alvin Mang’eni and Nigerian forward Victor Mbaoma.
Despite controlling nearly 58% of first-half ball possession and restricting Singida to long-range speculative attempts, Tusker’s lack of composure in the final third sent both sides into the dressing rooms deadlocked at 0-0.
Singida Black Stars adjusted their tactical shape after the interval, exploiting space behind Tusker’s advanced full-backs.
The decisive moment arrived seven minutes into the second half.
Midfielder Ahmed Pipino executed a well-weighted diagonal switch of play to find Mboma on the left flank.
The Congolese winger cut inward past his marker and unleashed a low, left-footed strike that squeezed past Perrauld Ndinga at the near post.
Tusker pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but Singida nearly doubled their advantage on the counter-attack in the 63rd minute when Henry David broke clear, forcing a smart save from Ndinga.
Tusker’s best opportunity to level came 12 minutes from time when Mbaoma broke through on a one-on-one, only for Amos to produce another crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.
The result compounds Tusker’s historical struggles against Tanzanian opposition, marking their eighth defeat in 13 encounters against clubs from across the southern border.
Speaking post-match, Tusker head coach Julien Mette stressed the importance of mental fortitude ahead of the trip to Chamazi.
“We played with good intensity and controlled the tempo for long periods, but at this level, if you don’t take your chances, you get punished,” Mette reflected. “We have 90 minutes remaining in Tanzania to correct our mistakes and demonstrate an elite mentality.”
The second leg is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the Azam Complex Stadium in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.
Tusker must secure a two-goal victory or a high-scoring one-goal win (e.g., 2-1 or 3-2) via away goals to reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time since 2021.
