Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres has been warned that his future at the Emirates Stadium could be in serious doubt, with former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor predicting that the Swedish international will be sold before next season.
Agbonlahor made the bold claim during an appearance on talkSPORT, criticising Gyökeres’ movement and overall performances during his opening months at Arsenal.
The 28-year-old started Arsenal’s recent match against Everton and was involved in the move that led to an opening goal. However, his contribution did little to silence questions about whether he can become the long-term solution to Arsenal’s centre-forward position.
“Looks like he’s like running in slow motion, isn’t he? Looks like he can’t run,” Agbonlahor said, questioning the striker’s pace and ability to influence games.
He added that although Gyökeres could hold the ball up, he expected the striker to leave the club before the next campaign.
Agbonlahor also suggested Arsenal might have considered using Gyökeres in a potential deal for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez had the Argentine been willing to join the Premier League side.
Gyökeres arrived at Arsenal with a strong goalscoring reputation following his prolific spell at Sporting CP. Expectations were high that he would provide the firepower needed to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s attacking options.
However, limited Premier League minutes and a lack of goals in his early appearances have intensified scrutiny of his adaptation to Arsenal’s playing style.
The criticism comes amid wider questions about Arsenal’s attacking depth after the club failed to secure several high-profile forward targets during the transfer window.
Despite Agbonlahor’s confidence, his comments represent a pundit’s prediction rather than confirmation of Arsenal’s transfer plans. The club has not publicly confirmed that Gyökeres will be sold.
His performances in the coming months could prove crucial in shaping the debate over his future in north London.
