Manchester City and Arsenal are locked level on 21 points atop the Premier League table after eight rounds of matches, with the leaders separated only by goal difference as the title race begins to take shape.
City hold top spot on goal difference, having scored 20 and conceded 9 across their eight matches, compared to Arsenal's 13 goals for and 5 against. Brighton & Hove Albion sit third with 16 points, boasting the division's most dominant goal difference at plus 16 after netting 23 goals in their opening eight games.
Liverpool occupy fourth with 15 points, followed by Chelsea in fifth on 13. Brentford and Leeds United round out the top half of the table level on 11 points apiece, with Newcastle United and Aston Villa also on 11 but separated by inferior goal difference.
At the other end, Manchester United sit 16th with seven points, level with Crystal Palace who occupy 17th despite a markedly worse goal difference of minus 10. Nottingham Forest, Coventry City and Sunderland make up the bottom three, with Sunderland rooted at the foot of the table on five points after eight matches.
With a third of the season now complete, the gap between the top two and the chasing pack remains narrow, while the bottom of the table is similarly tightly contested, setting up what is shaping into a closely fought campaign both for the title and against relegation.
