América de Cali booked its place in the 2026 Copa BetPlay semifinals with a resounding 4-0 victory over Barranquilla F.C. at Romelio Martínez stadium, Win Sports reported. Omar Bertel opened the scoring early in the seventh minute before Tomás Ángel added a brace, and Edson Tortolero rounded out the goals in the comprehensive away win.

Early strikes and missed chances shape the quarterfinal second leg

The visiting side established control almost immediately when Omar Bertel found the back of the net just seven minutes into the match. Edson Tortolero nearly doubled the lead in the 12th minute, heading wide from close range after a buildup led by Luis Quiñones. Barranquilla weathered further pressure before Guzmán missed a 31st-minute penalty kick that could have altered the home side’s trajectory. Instead, Ángel struck in the 42nd minute to give América a comfortable 2-0 cushion before halftime, and by the 44th minute it was already a rout at Romelio.

The second half brought further scoring as the visitors capitalized on defensive lapses. Ángel secured his brace in the 68th minute, capping an offensive display that left little doubt about the aggregate outcome as the second-tier side ultimately fell short against the top-flight opposition.

David González outlines squad rotation and title ambitions

Speaking after the match, América de Cali manager David González emphasized that the club’s history demands a championship chase across all active competitions, noting that the squad will seek the Copa and Liga titles because it is the obligation of a club like the scarlet team. Desde el principio del semestre tenemos objetivos muy claros, estar en este equipo no te permite nada más, González said, noting that every fixture must be treated as a final.

The tactical configuration required adjustments due to personnel shortages in the defensive flanks.

América de Cali advances to face Internacional de Bogotá in the next round of the tournament. The progression keeps the squad alive for silverware in both the domestic cup and league campaigns, though the heavy calendar continues to draw scrutiny from the technical staff. Addressing speculation regarding whether the season schedule might stretch into 2027, González indicated skepticism given CONMEBOL deadlines for international tournament qualification.

Despite the physical toll of competing on multiple fronts, the manager praised the resilience shown by Barranquilla F.C. throughout the 90 minutes. The second-division opponent maintained tactical intensity despite the deficit, earning recognition from the América bench for a spirited challenge that tested the visitors’ depth before the final whistle confirmed the 4-0 result, with González specifically highlighting that el central derecho tiene un despliegue increíble, el interior Gómez Palomino es un chico interesante, son jugadores atrevidos y que no tienen temor de querer jugar.
