Cardiff City and Birmingham City meet at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a fascinating Championship contest between two clubs that have both recently escaped League One.
The Bluebirds have recovered impressively from a difficult opening to the season, while Birmingham arrive in South Wales as one of the division’s most in-form sides. With Cardiff unbeaten in five home league games and Birmingham winning four of their last five matches, there is little to separate the teams on current momentum.
Cardiff’s start to life back in the Championship was anything but straightforward. Brian Barry-Murphy’s side went seven matches without a victory, drawing four and losing three, but their fortunes have changed considerably. The Bluebirds have lost only once in their last four league games, collecting seven points in the process.
Their latest outing showed both their progress and their remaining vulnerabilities. Cardiff appeared on course to claim their first away victory of the campaign at Middlesbrough after taking the lead, only for Tommy Conway and Will Lankshear to rescue a 2-2 draw for the promotion contenders. The major attacking positive has been Jack Moylan. The former Lincoln City playmaker has adapted extremely well to Championship football, contributing to nine second-tier goals already. His recent form has been particularly impressive, with three goals across his last two appearances.
Cardiff will also take confidence from their home record. They are unbeaten in five league matches at the Cardiff City Stadium, winning twice and drawing three. Their recent home performances have been particularly convincing, with a 3-1 victory over Charlton Athletic followed by a spectacular 5-1 win against Watford and that makes Saturday’s fixture a genuine test of Birmingham’s promotion credentials.
Few Championship sides have enjoyed a better run than Birmingham since the September/October international break. The Blues are the only Championship team with a 100% record since that break, and their overall unbeaten run has now reached five matches, including four victories.
Most importantly, Chris Davies’s side have won their last three Championship games, a sequence that has pushed them into the promotion picture. Their latest victory was arguably their most convincing. Birmingham defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-0, with Liam Millar scoring twice.
Millar has become one of the most influential players in the division since joining from Hull City. The Canadian has produced seven goal contributions in seven matches, making the decision not to bring back Ibrahim Osman much less significant than it initially appeared. Birmingham currently sit fourth with 20 points from 11 matches, and another victory would strengthen their position among the early promotion contenders.
There is also an intriguing historical element as Birmingham return to the Cardiff City Stadium for the first time since December 2023, when Wayne Rooney was still in charge of the Blues. This could be an especially interesting tactical contest because both sides possess dangerous attacking players but may approach the game differently.
Cardiff’s biggest weapon could be Moylan operating behind or around Salech. The return of Yousef Salech means Moylan should no longer have to function as a makeshift striker, potentially restoring the playmaker to the areas where he can influence the game most effectively.
Birmingham, meanwhile, are likely to rely heavily on their wide players. Millar’s form makes him the obvious danger, while the choice between Patrick Roberts and Carlos Vicente could indicate how aggressively Davies wants to approach the game.
With Cardiff enjoying home advantage, Birmingham may initially prioritise control rather than committing too many players forward. The Hard Tackle takes a look at how both sides could line up and what tactics they might employ on the day.
Cardiff receive a major attacking boost with Yousef Salech returning from a shoulder injury. His availability should allow Jack Moylan to move back into a more natural creative role after being deployed as a striker in recent matches.
There are greater concerns defensively. Gabriel Osho is suspended after being sent off against Middlesbrough, while Dylan Lawlor remains out with a hamstring injury and Calum Chambers continues his recovery from a knee problem.
Cardiff are expected to retain a 4-5-1, with Jack Robertson, Rubin Colwill, Alex Robertson, Callum Turnbull, Jack Moylan and George Willock providing the midfield and attacking creativity around Salech. The return of Salech should be particularly significant because it allows Cardiff to restore Moylan to the space between midfield and attack.
That could be one of the defining tactical battles. Birmingham’s double-pivot structure will need to prevent Moylan from receiving freely between the lines, especially given his recent scoring form. Cardiff can also look to exploit the channels through their full-backs, but doing so could leave space for Birmingham’s wingers to counter.
The absence of Osho means Cardiff will have to be particularly disciplined centrally. Birmingham’s movement around the penalty area could expose any communication problems in a reshuffled defence.
Probable Lineup (4-5-1): Trott; Kpakio, Bielik, Fish, Bagan; Robertson, Tanner, Turnbull, Moylan, Willock; Salech
Birmingham have just one significant fitness concern, with Paik Seung-Ho potentially unavailable because of a muscle problem. Despite Demarai Gray scoring twice as a substitute recently, his reward is likely to be another place on the bench given Liam Millar’s outstanding form.
There is a tactical decision on the opposite flank, where Carlos Vicente could replace Patrick Roberts. Vicente’s greater defensive work rate could be useful against Cardiff’s attacking full-backs. Birmingham’s biggest advantage is their ability to transition quickly through Millar.
The Canadian can receive wide, attack his full-back or move inside to combine with the midfield. If Cardiff push their full-backs high, Birmingham could deliberately target the spaces left behind them. The selection of Vicente would reinforce that strategy. His work rate could help Birmingham form a more compact defensive block before launching attacks through Millar on the opposite side.
The midfield battle will also be crucial. Tomoki Iwata and Solis will need to prevent Moylan from dictating the game, while Birmingham’s attacking midfielders can look to isolate Cardiff’s reshuffled centre-back pairing.
Probable Lineup (4-5-1): Beadle; Osayi-Samuel, Neumann, Klarer, Cochrane; Iwata, Solis, Vicente, Stansfield, Millar; Priske
The Birmingham winger has rapidly become one of the most influential attacking players in the Championship, producing seven goal contributions in seven appearances since arriving on loan from Hull City.
His direct running could be particularly important against Cardiff’s 4-5-1. Millar can hold the width to stretch the Bluebirds’ defence before driving inside, while his acceleration makes him a dangerous outlet when Birmingham regain possession.
Cardiff’s defensive reshuffle, particularly the absence of Gabriel Osho, could give Millar an opportunity to attack a less settled defensive unit. If Birmingham can get Millar isolated against Cardiff’s full-back, he could be the player who turns a tight contest in the visitors’ favour.
Cardiff’s recent home record means Birmingham should not expect an easy afternoon. The Bluebirds have found greater defensive stability and possess enough attacking quality through Moylan and Salech to cause problems. However, Birmingham are currently operating at a different level of consistency. Their midfield structure, Millar’s form and the confidence generated by three successive league victories make them difficult to oppose.
