Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he recommended Michael Carrick to the club’s senior officials during discussions over the managerial position in January 2026.
Both former United figures were interviewed as potential replacements for Ruben Amorim, but Solskjaer says he used his own interview to speak positively about Carrick’s qualities.
The Norwegian, who managed United between 2018 and 2021, believes the club would be getting a good person if they decided to appoint his former assistant.
Speaking to Forza Football, Solskjaer disclosed that he encouraged United to consider Carrick, highlighting his character during their discussions.
“When I spoke with Man United, I also spoke highly of Michael Carrick,” he said.
“I said: If you choose him, you’re getting a good man.”
Carrick eventually took charge at Old Trafford following Amorim’s departure, but his tenure has come under increasing scrutiny amid a difficult run of results.
The former United midfielder is under pressure after failing to secure a victory in his last nine matches across all competitions.
The results have raised questions about his position as United continue to struggle for consistency.
