Steven Gerrard has revealed that Bayern Munich attempted to sign him toward the end of his time at Liverpool, with the Anfield hero explaining why he turned down the opportunity.
Gerrard had several chances to leave Liverpool during his career, handing in a transfer request after winning the Champions League in 2005, with Jose Mourinho looking to take him to Chelsea, and Real Madrid also declaring its interest.
He eventually chose to stay at Liverpool before Mourinho made another attempt to sign him with Inter Milan. Madrid also reportedly attempted to sign Gerrard in 2010, when Mourinho had joined the Spanish giants. It comes after Gerrard heaped praise on one of the Reds' newest additions.
Speaking on the Overlap Daily this week, Gerrard said, "I had some interest from foreign teams, and the majority of that was through [now Real Madrid coach] José Mourinho.
"Inter Milan, Real Madrid, on a couple of occasions, and at the back end a few conversations with my agent when [Bastian] Schweinsteiger was leaving Bayern."
Gerrard may have his timeline wrong on this occasion, with Munich's interest believed to be in 2012 — as he references in his 2013 autobiography — the same season Brendan Rodgers joined the club. Schweinsteiger remained at Munich until 2015, although playing a lesser role in the team in his latter years, before spending a season with Manchester United.
When explaining why he turned down the move, Gerrard stated he has no regrets about leaving Liverpool, knowing he loves being in the city, among family and friends.
He said: "I wasn't really that interested in it because I was never going to leave Liverpool at the time. I was enjoying my football under [coach] Brendan [Rodgers] when that one came but yes, three of four of the big teams showed some interest during my career, which is flattering, of course it is.
"When you watch the likes of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane and you see them winning loads of trophies with foreign teams, it does cross your mind and you go back and you think.
"But I have no regrets in terms of the decisions I made. No regrets.
"I see these lads going and settling... I am not sure I had that in my locker. I am a home person; I love being at home. Even when I went away with England, I counted down the days to get back home. Liverpool suited me and my character."
Gerrard, as of now, appears to have fully transitioned to an analyst role after his time coaching with Rangers, Aston Villa, and Al Ettifaq. It remains to be seen if he ever returns to the sideline.
