‘Silly Goals!’ – Maresca Delivers Brutal Verdict After Man City’s Second Straight Defeat

Enzo Maresca has sent a strong warning to his Manchester City players following their disappointing 1-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton, insisting that avoidable defensive mistakes must stop if his team are to maintain their challenge for the title.

The Blues suffered their second consecutive league defeat on Saturday afternoon, with Yasin Ayari’s first-half goal proving decisive at the Etihad Stadium.

It was another frustrating result for Maresca, whose team had previously enjoyed seven consecutive victories to begin their Premier League campaign. However, defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton have exposed problems that the Italian manager clearly wants addressed.

Despite controlling large portions of the Brighton encounter, Manchester City struggled to turn their possession into goals. More concerningly, another individual defensive mistake allowed their opponents to take advantage and collect all three points.

Speaking after the match, Maresca did not hide his frustration, highlighting the recurring errors that have cost his team valuable points.

Maresca identifies Manchester City’s biggest problem

The Manchester City manager believes his players are making unnecessary mistakes at crucial moments, allowing opponents to punish them despite the team’s overall performances.

Following the defeat, Maresca specifically addressed the defensive errors that have contributed to City’s recent setbacks.

“In this moment we are conceding silly goals that we can avoid and hopefully we can avoid in the next game,” the Italian explained.

He acknowledged that individual mistakes are part of football but stressed the importance of understanding what is going wrong and finding solutions.

“Unfortunately it is happening for our players but I think it is part of the game, part of football, it happens many times against us, we need to analyse understand what we can do better and try to move on.”

His comments represent a clear message to the squad.

City have demonstrated enough attacking quality to compete with the strongest teams in England, but defensive concentration remains a concern.

For a team with ambitions of winning the Premier League, giving opponents opportunities through avoidable mistakes is a problem that cannot continue.

Maresca will expect his experienced defenders and other players across the team to show greater responsibility in these situations.

Matheus Nunes mistake proves costly against Brighton

The latest defensive problem involved Matheus Nunes, whose failure to deal with a dangerous Brighton delivery ultimately allowed the visitors to score the only goal of the game.

Brighton began the contest positively, pressing City and looking to exploit spaces in the home side’s defensive structure.

Their approach paid off in the 11th minute.

Diego Gómez delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area, but Nunes failed to make the necessary interception. The ball subsequently reached Maxim De Cuyper before falling perfectly for Yasin Ayari.

The Brighton midfielder needed little invitation, finishing from close range to give the visitors an early advantage.

It was a disappointing moment for City because the goal could have been prevented with better defensive organisation and concentration.

Once again, Manchester City found themselves chasing a game after conceding a goal that Maresca believes should have been avoided.

The problem is becoming particularly frustrating because the Blues have generally controlled their matches but have not always received the results their performances have suggested.

Their previous 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa provided another example.

City had also been criticised for individual mistakes in that encounter, with defensive and goalkeeping errors contributing to the disappointing result.

Maresca will now be concerned that these incidents are becoming a pattern rather than isolated mistakes.

Manchester City created chances but lacked clinical finishing

Although the defensive error was decisive, Maresca also recognised that his team failed to make the most of their attacking opportunities.

City dominated much of the Brighton encounter and spent considerable periods trying to break down the visitors’ defensive organisation.

However, their possession did not translate into enough meaningful efforts on goal.

Iliman Ndiaye came close to scoring with a first-half header, while City also had several penalty appeals rejected.

After the break, the Blues increased the pressure.

The introduction of Rayan Cherki provided another attacking option, and a superb pass from the Frenchman released Nunes into a promising position. However, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced an important save.

City continued pushing for an equaliser, but their finishing remained disappointing.

Nico O’Reilly had perhaps the clearest late opportunity when he sent a header narrowly wide in the 90th minute.

It was another moment that demonstrated City’s lack of precision in front of goal.

Maresca believes his players created enough opportunities to collect points from the match.

Reflecting on the performance, he said:

“It is a very similar feeling to what we had after the Aston Villa match. Unfortunately, we created enough chances to get some points but we didn’t score, at this moment, things are going like this.”

The manager also insisted that the team needed to move forward rather than become consumed by the disappointment.

“We did enough to deserve a positive result but we have to move forward and try to win matches.”

His assessment highlights two major issues that Manchester City must address: defensive mistakes and a lack of efficiency in attacking situations.

Maresca refuses to panic despite consecutive defeats

Despite his frustration, Maresca was keen to remind everyone that losing matches is part of football.

The Italian manager understands that even the strongest teams cannot maintain perfect records throughout an entire campaign.

However, he also recognises that the manner of City’s recent defeats makes the situation particularly disappointing.

After seven consecutive Premier League victories, back-to-back losses have interrupted the team’s momentum.

Maresca admitted that nobody at the club was happy with the situation.

“For sure we are not happy. The players, me the coaching staff, no one is happy when we lose games at all, for sure, but we were aware we were not going to win all the games so these kind of moments arrive.”

He added that the priority was improving the team’s performances and returning to winning ways as quickly as possible.

That message is important because City still have plenty to play for this season.

The Premier League title race is far from decided, and there is no reason for the squad to allow two disappointing results to undermine the confidence built during their impressive opening run.

However, the manager will need to ensure that his players respond with greater discipline.

Goals are not the problem, according to Maresca

Interestingly, Maresca does not believe Manchester City’s overall attacking output is the main concern.

The Blues remain among the Premier League’s most productive attacking teams, and the manager pointed out that they are currently second in the division for goals scored.

Instead, he believes the team’s defensive shortcomings are making life unnecessarily difficult.

“At the moment, we are second in terms of goals scored in the Premier League and that means we are scoring goals. But we are conceding silly goals and we can avoid that, hopefully we can avoid that in the next match.”

This is an important distinction.

Manchester City do not necessarily need to completely change their attacking approach. They need to become more reliable defensively while maintaining the attacking quality that has helped them collect important victories.

The balance between those two aspects could prove decisive in their title challenge.

Maresca will also expect his players to demonstrate greater concentration during moments when opponents attempt to exploit defensive spaces.

Against Brighton, one significant lapse was enough to decide the entire contest.

RB Leipzig provides immediate opportunity for a response

Manchester City’s attention must now turn towards their next assignment, with a Champions League meeting against RB Leipzig scheduled for Wednesday, 4 November.

The trip to Germany offers Maresca an immediate opportunity to demand a reaction from his players.

A convincing performance and positive result would help restore confidence ahead of the next Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.

However, the manager will be particularly interested in seeing improvements at both ends of the pitch.

City must defend more intelligently, avoid unnecessary individual errors and become more clinical when opportunities arrive.

The quality within the squad is unquestionable, but talent alone will not guarantee success if basic mistakes continue to undermine the team’s performances.

Maresca has already made his expectations clear.

His warning about conceding avoidable goals should serve as a reminder that every player has a responsibility to protect the team’s defensive structure.

For Manchester City supporters, the Brighton defeat was another frustrating afternoon at the Etihad.

Nevertheless, the season remains at an early stage, and the response to these setbacks will be more important than the defeats themselves.

Maresca now needs his players to turn his words into action.

If City can eliminate the defensive mistakes and rediscover their attacking efficiency, there is every reason to believe they can return to their best form.

The next few matches could provide an important indication of whether these consecutive defeats are merely temporary setbacks or evidence of a deeper problem within the team.
